HMAS Australia was positioned roughly halfway between Australia and New Zealand as Charles Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm attemnpted the first Trans Tasman crossing by airplane in case a sea rescue was required. HMAS Australia was on her maiden voyage to Australia after commissioning in the UK.
