DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nMonthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 24 October 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker Commander Doug Stevens RAN (Rtd) \n  “RAN Submarine Basing” \nDoug spent 21 years as an Engineer on full time service in the Royal Australian Navy\, and many years later commenced a further nine years of part time service.  In 2010 he was commissioned by Head of the Future Submarines Program\, RADM Moffitt\, to research and write a future-submarines basing study.  The associated report\, submitted in November 2011\, underpins today’s decision making by Defence about the creation of an east coast submarines home port. \nThe 2011 report was written around Defence’s planned acquisition at that time of twelve diesel-electric submarines.  Its stated purpose was to inform submarine homeport decision making which was anticipated to take place from 2021 onwards.  It shortlisted in descending order\, nine east coast homeport options. \nThe cancellation of the twelve diesel-electric submarine program and its replacement by eight nuclear propelled submarines reduces the east-coast homeport options\, according to Doug\, from nine to five.  Doug updated his earlier report in June this year with a related article in the Naval Officers Club Newsletter. \nDoug will describe key considerations necessary when deciding where to homeport submarines\, and draw from his two reports relating to east-coast basing of Australia’s next class of submarines.  This promises to provide a fascinating insight into this strategically important decision making process. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n A relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting \n

DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 27 June 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker Captain Andrew Mackinnon CSC RAN (Rtd) \non    “J-Class Submarines in the RAN” \n  \nAndrew Mackinnon is a former Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist officer. He joined the RAN College in 1963 and spent 38 varied and rewarding years in uniform at sea and later ashore\, including command of the patrol boat HMAS Wollongong and Navy’s shore establishments at HMAS Cairns and HMAS Coonawarra.  In 2001 he joined the Australian Public Service and served a further 17 years in Navy Headquarters\, as the Director Navy Infrastructure Plans. \nAndrew has an abiding interest in the history of the Royal Australian Navy and is currently the President of the Victoria Chapter of the Naval Historical Society of Australia. \nHis presentation will describe the life story of the fast J-Class Submarines\, which were built in the UK during World War I.  He will briefly mention their service in the Royal Navy\, before all six were gifted to Australia in 1919 and made their way with a new depot ship to Australia\, under the watchful eye of a wartime submarine Victoria Cross winner. \nHe will cover the maintenance challenges they faced on arrival in Sydney\, and their subsequent transfer to a new flotilla headquarters at Corio Bay in Geelong\, Victoria.  The account will outline their brief seagoing training activities on the Australian coast before they fell victim to heavy Defence budgetary cuts in the post-war period\, which ultimately led to their scrapping and scuttling at various sites in the Port Phillip area. \nThey are arguably now Victoria’s submarines! \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 23 May 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker \nLieutenant Commander John Redman RAN (Rtd) “Sydney-Emden Battle & Aftermath” \nLieutenant Commander Redman’s naval career as a professional engineering officer began in the Royal Navy before he transferred to the RAN in 1972.  He served in HMA Ships Sydney\, Melbourne and latterly as Senior Engineer in HMAS Stalwart\, before retiring and working in various senior consultancy roles. \nJohn has an abiding interest in naval history and is currently the Vice President of the Naval Historical Society of Australia (Victoria Chapter). \nHis presentation will describe the so-called Battle of Cocos\, which was a single-ship action that occurred on 9 November 1914\, involving the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney as it responded to an attack on the communications station at Direction Island by the German light cruiser and commerce raider SMS Emden.  This battle was the Royal Australian Navy’s first victory during World War I and ended Emden’s dominance in the waters around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. \nIn addition to describing key aspects of the battle\, John will cover the less well-known story of how the German Navy raiding party left behind on Direction Island\, under Emden’s Executive Officer Helmet von Mücke\, made their escape after Sydney was compelled to disengage from the battle and resume convoy escort duties.  Over the next six months\, Mücke led this group of 53 sailors on one of the longest escapes recorded – over 11\,000 km (6\,800 nm) by sea and land – losing only one man to disease and three to enemy action. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Our Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 26 April 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker \nLieutenant Commander Roger Buxton RCN (Rtd) \n“Exploring and Charting the Western Arctic” \nThe Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet.  Areas that in the past were seldom navigable because of ice are becoming ice-free for longer in the summer.  For strategic and environmental reasons\, the ability for more ships to passage through the Arctic for longer periods each year is becoming increasingly important. \n  \nNHSA member Roger Buxton will talk on “Exploring and Charting the Western Arctic” to show how this area was discovered and opened up\, from the earliest times to the present day.  The talk will concentrate on the reasons for the voyages of exploration and their results\, and especially the effect of the evolution of technology (“the science of the industrial arts”) on navigation and accuracy in mapping the Arctic. \nRoger is a former Royal Canadian Navy Weapons Officer (combined Gunnery/TAS and Weapons Electrical\, later PWO) with an interest in naval history and the Arctic.  He has spoken at our meetings previously\, including on the Franklin Expedition to the Arctic to complete the search for the North West Passage. \n  \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n(Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination status will be required to gain entry) \n  \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Our Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 28 March 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker     Captain Jorgen Berg \n“Adventures in Antarctica” \nEvery visit to Antarctica must be an adventure – and in varying roles onboard Danish polar expedition ships\, Jorgen Berg has had adventures aplenty. \nOriginally from Denmark\, he undertook his first voyage as a deck apprentice for 10 months onboard the “Kista Dan” in 1962/63. He later saw active service in the Royal Danish Navy\, serving in mini-corvettes from 1967-69.  Then with his appetite for the South Atlantic and Antarctic whetted\, he returned on a further three separate voyages in 1970/71 (as 1st Officer)\, then 1974/75 and 1976/77 (as Chief Officer)\, all onboard the “Thala Dan”.  He spent a total of 500 days onboard undertaking various re-supply tasks in different locations. \nHe now lives in Australia\, after many years of seagoing experience and senior port management roles in the US\, Dominican Republic\, France and Denmark. \nThis promises to be a fascinating account of operations in this beautiful but dangerous environment from an experienced mariner.  Jorgen will focus his account on the navigation and cargo supply to the Antarctic bases Dumont d’Urville\, Casey and Macquarie Island and his responsibilities and challenges of getting critical cargo ashore onto the ice. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n(Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination status will be required to gain entry) \n  \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 23 August 2021\nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room\n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \nGuest Speaker      Captain Jorgen Berg  “Adventures in Antarctica” \nEvery visit to Antarctica must be an adventure – and in varying roles onboard Danish polar expedition ships\, Jorgen Berg has had adventures aplenty. \nOriginally from Denmark\, he undertook his first voyage as a deck apprentice for 10 months onboard the “Kista Dan” in 1962/63. He later saw active service in the Royal Danish Navy\, serving in mini-corvettes from 1967-69.  Then with his appetite for the South Atlantic and Antarctic whetted\, he returned on a further three separate voyages in 1970/71 (as 1st Officer)\, then 1974/75 and 1976/77 (as Chief Officer)\, all onboard the “Thala Dan”.  He spent a total of 500 days onboard undertaking various re-supply tasks in different locations. \nHe now lives in Australia\, after many years of seagoing experience and senior port management roles in the US\, Dominican Republic\, France and Denmark. \nThis promises to be a fascinating account of operations in this beautiful but dangerous environment from an experienced mariner.  Jorgen will focus his account on the navigation and cargo supply to the Antarctic bases Dumont d’Urville\, Casey and Macquarie Island and his responsibilities and challenges of getting critical cargo ashore onto the ice. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

His work was acknowledged with award of a Conspicuous Medal. Throughout his career\, he had experience in a wide range of Navy and ADF operations through various sea and shore posting and operational roles. Highlights have included deployments to the Middle East\, Southern Ocean and being the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the Anzac class frigate HMAS Parramatta. Vice Admiral Noonan assumed command of the Royal Australian Navy on 7 July 2018 and will be the 32nd professional head of the Australian Navy\, and the 9th officer to hold the title of Chief of Navy Australia. DESCRIPTION:This Month  our Speaker is our member Captain Brian Surtees. Brian joined the RAF in 1957 and flew many aircraft during his 12 years of service. Brian and his family emigrated to Australia in 1969 and after 12 months as a Jackaroo in Queensland\, he joined our Dept. of Civil Aviation\, eventually joining the DCA Flying unit at Essendon Airport. For the next 24 years he enjoyed a career flying F27\,Merlin\,Rockwell Commander 1000\, and F28 aircraft on navaid calibration and radar for the RAAF\, the RAN\, the Army\, the RNZAF and occasional V.I.P work. Currently Brian is a volunteer at the DCA Museum at Essendon Airport. SUMMARY:Technology and the Battle of the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle of the Second World War and possibly the most important. If the Allies had lost control of the Atlantic to the German U-boats\, Britain would have been forced out of the war\, The Soviet Union might have been forced to make peace with Hitler and there would have been no Allied landing in France. \n  \nRoger Buxton\, a former RCN weapons officer (combined weapons electrical with gunnery and TAS/ principal warfare officer) will talk about the effect of technology on both sides of this battle. For both the naval and air forces involved the struggle for technological superiority was essential to success. The technology developed during this battle led to some surprising post-war domestic applications as well antisubmarine warfare equipment used during the Cold War. DESCRIPTION:Our Marty Grogan has recently retired as Manager of our HMAS CERBERUS Museum\, and not only is he an excellent speaker\, he is also a font of knowledge on the collection owing to his extensive research on the artefacts of the museum\, undertaken over the ten years of his tenure. \nOne such artefact is the ships bell from our ‘N’ class destroyer\, HMAS Nestor. The Nestor story is brief but fascinating. It involves Artic Convoys\, HMS Hood\, Bismark and a battle for survival in the Med. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate with us the ‘UNIT CITATION FOR GALLANTRY BEING AWARDED TO          THE RAN HELICOPTER FLIGHT VIETNAM’ \nWaverley RSL 161 Coleman Parade Glen Waverley (Melways 71C3) \nIn August this year\, Members of the Royal Australian Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV) were presented with a unit citation for Gallantry at a ceremony held at  our Australian war Memorial in Canberra. Individual RANHFV members  had previously received high level honours\, however\, now the whole unit received recognition for their heroism and devotion to duty. \nOur Speaker is\, CMDR Max Speedy DSC RANR\, who was posted as 2 ic of RANHFV in 1968.The Flight served with the US Army’s 135th Assault Helicopter Company. Max personally flew 1250 hours on combat assault missions with American and South Vietnamese troops. Max will share with us the RANHFV story; as story of great gallantry previously not well known\, or understood\, by the Australian people\, but now with the ‘Citation’\, is recognised at last! \nThe RSL is conveniently situated opposite the station in Glen Waverley\, and the RSL Car park is free\, but you need to display a ticket on your dash board (obtainable from reception) \nFor our November ‘End of Year Celebration’ we enjoy our meal in the ‘Sunset Room’. The  cost is very reasonable\, and the food delicious. It is still only $30 for a two course meal. We will have our own bar\, and the drinks are at ‘Bar’ prices. \nPayment can be made by cheque\, cash on the night\, or by direct debit. SUMMARY:The Successful Search for AE 1 - Vic Chapter
DESCRIPTION:The Find  A E 1 Ltd search for HMAS AE1 in December 2017 and the follow up examination of the wreck in early 2018 with MV Fugro Equator\nand MV Petrel respectively! \nCaptain Ken Greig served in our RAN for 25 years from 1971.He was Engineer Officer of the Oberon Class Submarines Onslow and Ovens  before ‘surfacing’ in the landing ship HMAS Tobruk.He was Project Officer Officer for refits on Cockatoo Island; Submarin and  Squadron Engineer based at HMAS Platypus  then Engineer of HMAS Success.\nCaptain Greig was Project Manager of the Collin’s Class Submarine Project\, and then policy director for Submarine Engineering matters.\nThat Ken is passionate about Submarines and their history\,  will be most obvious to you when you meet him on October 22nd. \nHeavily involved in the ‘Silent Anzac Project’ the Foundation  which aimed to Preserve\,Protect and Promote HMAS AE 2\,Ken was also Company Secretary  of Find AE 1 Ltd.the organisation established in September 2013 to continue the search for HMAS AE 1 tragically lost with all hands\,14 September 1914 and subsequently found on 20 December 2017.\nJoin us to hear Captain Ken Greig RAN Rtd. DESCRIPTION:Andrew (Andy) Mackinnon joined the RAN in 1963 and trained as an Officer in the UK and Australia .He served in HMAS VENDETTA off Vietnam 1970.Andy’s early  career consisted   of  further training in the UK\, exchange duty with the USN \, service in\, and command of patrol boats culminating in the command of HMAS CAIRNS and duties as NOC Cairns  and Commander Australian Patrol Boat Forces. Promoted Captain in 1990\,he then served with the Dept of Defence as Director\, South West Pacific branch \,International Policy Division. Subsequently he was C O HMAS COONAWARRA in Darwin throughout 1995-96.Three years service followed as our Defence Advisor in NZ from 1997-99 \,during which the Bougainville and East Timor interventions occurred and major changes to NZDF capability were developed. Subsequently he served as Director UN\, Peace Operations and Arms control in the Strategy and International Policy Division in Canberra. DESCRIPTION:Captain Sheldon Williams RANR has served in our Navy for over forty years\, and has had numerous seagoing and shore based postings. These have included HMAS SYDNEY’s world circumnavigation in 1990\,exchange positions with the US Navy\, as strategic lead planner for Operations TSUNAMI ASSIST and PAKISTAN ASSIST\, Command of our HMAS CERBERUS in 2008-09. He deployed on active service to the Persian Gulf (Iran-1990-91) and the Middle East in 2003 and 2003. However the basis of Sheldon’s address to us on this occasion is about his time in India as Australia’s Defence Advisor to the Indian Government. His perspective on the rise to prominence of the Indian Navy is of particular interest to us.
