DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 23 August 2021\nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room\n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \nGuest Speaker      Captain Jorgen Berg  “Adventures in Antarctica” \nEvery visit to Antarctica must be an adventure – and in varying roles onboard Danish polar expedition ships\, Jorgen Berg has had adventures aplenty. \nOriginally from Denmark\, he undertook his first voyage as a deck apprentice for 10 months onboard the “Kista Dan” in 1962/63. He later saw active service in the Royal Danish Navy\, serving in mini-corvettes from 1967-69.  Then with his appetite for the South Atlantic and Antarctic whetted\, he returned on a further three separate voyages in 1970/71 (as 1st Officer)\, then 1974/75 and 1976/77 (as Chief Officer)\, all onboard the “Thala Dan”.  He spent a total of 500 days onboard undertaking various re-supply tasks in different locations. \nHe now lives in Australia\, after many years of seagoing experience and senior port management roles in the US\, Dominican Republic\, France and Denmark. \nThis promises to be a fascinating account of operations in this beautiful but dangerous environment from an experienced mariner.  Jorgen will focus his account on the navigation and cargo supply to the Antarctic bases Dumont d’Urville\, Casey and Macquarie Island and his responsibilities and challenges of getting critical cargo ashore onto the ice. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:**Cancelled due to Covid Restrictions** \nVictorian Chapter – Monthly Meeting \n  \nGuest Speaker Captain Ainsley Morthorpe CSM RAN Commanding Officer HMAS Cerberus on “Captain James Stirling RN” \n  \nCaptain Morthorpe’s distinguished naval career as a professional seaman officer has seen him serving at sea in various ships\, notably in command of HMAS Fremantle and HMAS Success. He has also commanded three key shore establishments – HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin\, HMAS Stirling in WA and now HMAS Cerberus. \nNo doubt his time serving in Western Australia gave him a particular interest in Captain James Stirling RN\, who sailed from England in in1826 in command of HMS Success\, to carry supplies to the colony in Sydney and Hobart. \nHe later explored the Australian coast\, at a time when the French were also undertaking exploration voyages of their own.  In early March 1827 he was off the coast of WA\, where he landed and began exploring the Swan River.  He later succeeded in lobbying the British Government to establish a settlement there. \nCaptain Morthorpe will provide some fascinating insights into how Captain Stirling’s previous career and experience shaped his ideas of a settlement in WA and the strategic thinking surrounding the location. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n A relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker Dr Steve Cole PhD\, BSc (Hons) has had extensive experience as an environmental management researcher\, policy maker and implementer\, both within Navy and as an industry consultant. \nHe has some fascinating and valuable stories to tell\, many from his time as the Navy Environment Manager in Canberra from 2001-2017. \nWith new challenges arising for Navy from the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999\, he worked on a variety of important policy areas. His work was acknowledged with award of a Conspicuous Medal. DESCRIPTION:When the Japanese submarine I-177 torpedoed and sank the Australian hospital ship Centaur ‘in May 1943\,268 crew\, doctors\, nurses and orderlies were killed. The event shocked the Australian Nation and the world\, generating a massive surge of resentment against the Japanese. Throughout his career\, he had experience in a wide range of Navy and ADF operations through various sea and shore posting and operational roles. Highlights have included deployments to the Middle East\, Southern Ocean and being the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the Anzac class frigate HMAS Parramatta. He has fulfilled leadership positions at all levels of the Australian Defence Force\, with senior positions including the Director of Military Strategic Commitments\, Director General of Operations at HQJOC\, Command of Maritime Border Command and Deputy Chief of Navy. In June 2018\, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his distinguished service in significant senior ADF command roles. Vice Admiral Noonan assumed command of the Royal Australian Navy on 7 July 2018 and will be the 32nd professional head of the Australian Navy\, and the 9th officer to hold the title of Chief of Navy Australia. In this role\, he is entrusted by Government to be its principal naval advisor\, and to raise\, train and sustain Australia’s naval forces to\nexecute maritime missions in a dynamic region. \n

DESCRIPTION:This Month  our Speaker is our member Captain Brian Surtees. Brian joined the RAF in 1957 and flew many aircraft during his 12 years of service. Brian and his family emigrated to Australia in 1969 and after 12 months as a Jackaroo in Queensland\, he joined our Dept. of Civil Aviation\, eventually joining the DCA Flying unit at Essendon Airport. For the next 24 years he enjoyed a career flying F27\,Merlin\,Rockwell Commander 1000\, and F28 aircraft on navaid calibration and radar for the RAAF\, the RAN\, the Army\, the RNZAF and occasional V.I.P work. Currently Brian is a volunteer at the DCA Museum at Essendon Airport. DESCRIPTION:The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle of the Second World War and possibly the most important. If the Allies had lost control of the Atlantic to the German U-boats\, Britain would have been forced out of the war\, The Soviet Union might have been forced to make peace with Hitler and there would have been no Allied landing in France. \n  \nRoger Buxton\, a former RCN weapons officer (combined weapons electrical with gunnery and TAS/ principal warfare officer) will talk about the effect of technology on both sides of this battle. For both the naval and air forces involved the struggle for technological superiority was essential to success. The technology developed during this battle led to some surprising post-war domestic applications as well antisubmarine warfare equipment used during the Cold War. Individual RANHFV members  had previously received high level honours\, however\, now the whole unit received recognition for their heroism and devotion to duty. \nOur Speaker is\, CMDR Max Speedy DSC RANR\, who was posted as 2 ic of RANHFV in 1968.The Flight served with the US Army’s 135th Assault Helicopter Company. Max personally flew 1250 hours on combat assault missions with American and South Vietnamese troops. Max will share with us the RANHFV story; as story of great gallantry previously not well known\, or understood\, by the Australian people\, but now with the ‘Citation’\, is recognised at last! \nThe RSL is conveniently situated opposite the station in Glen Waverley\, and the RSL Car park is free\, but you need to display a ticket on your dash board (obtainable from reception) \nFor our November ‘End of Year Celebration’ we enjoy our meal in the ‘Sunset Room’. DESCRIPTION:The Find  A E 1 Ltd search for HMAS AE1 in December 2017 and the follow up examination of the wreck in early 2018 with MV Fugro Equator\nand MV Petrel respectively! \nCaptain Ken Greig served in our RAN for 25 years from 1971.He was Engineer Officer of the Oberon Class Submarines Onslow and Ovens  before ‘surfacing’ in the landing ship HMAS Tobruk.He was Project Officer Officer for refits on Cockatoo Island; Submarin and  Squadron Engineer based at HMAS Platypus  then Engineer of HMAS Success.\nCaptain Greig was Project Manager of the Collin’s Class Submarine Project\, and then policy director for Submarine Engineering matters.\nThat Ken is passionate about Submarines and their history\,  will be most obvious to you when you meet him on October 22nd. \nHeavily involved in the ‘Silent Anzac Project’ the Foundation  which aimed to Preserve\,Protect and Promote HMAS AE 2\,Ken was also Company Secretary  of Find AE 1 Ltd.the organisation established in September 2013 to continue the search for HMAS AE 1 tragically lost with all hands\,14 September 1914 and subsequently found on 20 December 2017.\nJoin us to hear Captain Ken Greig RAN Rtd. DESCRIPTION:Andrew (Andy) Mackinnon joined the RAN in 1963 and trained as an Officer in the UK and Australia .He served in HMAS VENDETTA off Vietnam 1970.Andy’s early  career consisted   of  further training in the UK\, exchange duty with the USN \, service in\, and command of patrol boats culminating in the command of HMAS CAIRNS and duties as NOC Cairns  and Commander Australian Patrol Boat Forces. Promoted Captain in 1990\,he then served with the Dept of Defence as Director\, South West Pacific branch \,International Policy Division. Subsequently he was C O HMAS COONAWARRA in Darwin throughout 1995-96.Three years service followed as our Defence Advisor in NZ from 1997-99 \,during which the Bougainville and East Timor interventions occurred and major changes to NZDF capability were developed. Subsequently he served as Director UN\, Peace Operations and Arms control in the Strategy and International Policy Division in Canberra. These have included HMAS SYDNEY’s world circumnavigation in 1990\,exchange positions with the US Navy\, as strategic lead planner for Operations TSUNAMI ASSIST and PAKISTAN ASSIST\, Command of our HMAS CERBERUS in 2008-09. He deployed on active service to the Persian Gulf (Iran-1990-91) and the Middle East in 2003 and 2003. However the basis of Sheldon’s address to us on this occasion is about his time in India as Australia’s Defence Advisor to the Indian Government. His perspective on the rise to prominence of the Indian Navy is of particular interest to us. It depicts an American slant on events\, and when you get used to the narrator’s distortion of the word ‘Admiralty’\, and Australia’s exploits not getting a mention\, it has some excellent footage of Jutland and the U Boat campaign. Also featured is the German Spring Offensive in 1918 and the Austria/Italy conflict of 1917. DESCRIPTION:During WWII\, the HARMAN receiving station in Canberra provided communications services for the ships of the allied Navies working in the Pacific region. Commissioned HMAS HARMAN in 1943\, most vital to its success were the first servicewomen who began work as telegraphers\, telegraphists etc forming the basis of the WRANS which were formed in 1941. Tonights Speaker Pamela Nicholls enlisted in 1943\, and after training\, her initial job was to monitor Imperial Japanese Nay ships and submarines radio traffic\, in conjunction with Bletchley Park in the  UK \nPamela was commissioned later in the war and the tale she has to tell us is of great interest to History \nBuffs! DESCRIPTION:Our Speaker for February 2018 is CMDR Matthew Hoffman RAN\, the Executive Officer of our HMAS CERBERUS.CMDR Hoffman is a Maritime Warfare Officer\, Submariner with extensive Oberon and Collins Class submarine experience spanning a 28 year naval career. He joined the RAN as a Radio Operator in 1988 and has spent the vast majority of his career in the submarine force. During his service he has served on 10 submarines and completed numerous operational deployments. Recent shore based roles have included extensive experience in Submarine training\, both as Head of Submarine Warfare Training authority training and a three year posting as Director Training Authority Submarines. DESCRIPTION:‘UNCHARTED WATERS’ \nOur Speaker will be LCDR CASSANDRA MOHAPP RAN the First Lieutenant of our HMAS CERBERUS.LCDR Mohapp enlisted in the RAN in 1997 as a musician\, having completing a Bachelor of Music Degree\, and Diplomas in Music (Performance) and Education (Secondary) at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. Prior to joining the RAN\, Cassandra worked as a music teacher in both high and primary schools. The professional theatre beckoned and Bassoonist Cassandra\, was in the Orchestra pit for the productions: Phantom of the Opera\,and Miss Saigon! \nAs a Naval Musician\, Cassandra served in both permanent bands of our RAN\, including two years as the National Public Relations Manager for all RAN Bands. A highlight of this time was spending three months with HM Royal Marines Band\, which included performing at the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo. \nIn 2009 Cassandra commissioned from the rank of Petty Officer to Lieutenant and in 2012 was appointed Assistant Director of Music-Navy . Command followed in 2012\, as Music Director and OIC \,of the RAN Band Melbourne. Cassandra led this band during the International Fleet Review in 2013 on the Flagship\, HMAS SYDNEY IV. Cassandra also counts as a career highlight\, conducting the Dawn Service and Commemoration services in Gallipoli in 2013! \nWe will hear of Cassandra’s fascination on learning of the unique teaching techniques of our WRAN telegraphists in WWII using music to expedite the learning of Morse Code as well as other fascinating tales\, of what has been a very interesting career journey thus far into ‘UNCHARTED WATERS’. Join us on November 27th.LCDR Cassandra Mohapp joined the HMAS CERBERUS Command Team in December 2015\, and the story continues! \nThis is our last get-together for the year. Being a celebration  we invite you \,your partner and friends\, plus fellow members of the Waverley RSL Community and the Navy family at large\, to join us in the SUNSET Room for some beautiful food\, Betty’s raffle and congenial company.  You will enjoy a two course delicious meal for only $30  per head\, plus drinks at bar prices. SUMMARY:I W M Archive Film: 'British Pacific & East Indies Fleets 1942-1944'
DESCRIPTION:We present to you ‘Episodes of the Royal Navy’ Part 10\, The British Pacific and East Indies Fleets\, (first phase). \nCommencing in 1942 we see views of the early Eastern Fleet which initially consisted mainly  of a number of old R Class Battleships\, which were no match for a Japanese carrier led task force. Some warships seen from this period are: Resolution\, Warspite\, Devonshire\, Mauritius \,Gambia\, Frobisher  \,Devonshire\, Mauritius\, Gambia\, Frobisher\, Catterice\, Nizam & Paladin. There are also short sequences of Ramillies\, Malaya\, Illustrious\, Indomitable\, Hermione\, Lookout\, Laforey & Anthony re the assault on Madagascar\, taken to forstall Japanese occupation. \nIn 1944 arrived Renown\, Valliant\, Queen Elizabeth\, the US carrier Saratoga and the French Battleship Richelieu\, plus the beginning  of the BPF. Later in 1944 was the arrival of HMS Howe.  This film is an absolute feast of nostalgia for Naval History buffs!
