The History of the Pearling Industry in Western Australia”.  \nDr George Kailis is the Executive Chair of the M.G. Kailis Group\, one of Australia’s largest fishing and marine industries. George is also Adjunct Professor of Management and Law at the School of Business of the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle. George’s Doctorate was in the field of fisheries policy and law\, with an emphasis on legal history. \nGeorge is a Director of the Commonwealth Fisheries Association and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Australian National Centre for Oceans and Resource Security. DESCRIPTION:Captain Doug Theobold\, CSC RAN\, is the Commander of the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Force at HMAS Stirling at Garden Island\, WA. Captain Theobold will give the talk on Monday August 16th\, 2021\, on: \n“SUBMARINES INTO THE FUTURE” \n  \nCaptain Theobold from Esperance\, WA\, joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1987. He completed his shore submarine training in 1989 and qualified as a submariner whilst transiting the Sea of Marmara in HMAS Oxley during its historical 75th Anniversary of Gallipoli deployment. Captain Theobold has worked on the first three Collins Class submarines\, has completed submarine Command courses in the Netherlands and the USA\, and has worked as part of an overseas exchange program at Portsmouth UK and in Washington\, USA. He has been posted in  command of Collins Class submarines on three occasions\, including as Commissioning CO of HMAS Rankin. \nCaptain Theobold was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) in the 2017 Australia Day Honours in the field of submarine operations and fleet anti-submarine warfare training. \nIn December 218\, Captain Theobold became the Commander of the Submarine Force at Garden Island\, WA. \n  \n*********************************** \nThe talk is on Monday August 16th at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park opposite Foodies on Davies Road. DESCRIPTION:Dr George Carter is a retired Orthopaedic Surgeon. He undertook his medical studies while serving as a volunteer in the Royal Australian Navy. After completing his medical studies\, Dr Carter served as a Medical Officer\, with seagoing service during the Vietnam War and later in the Reserve Force. \nRecently\, Dr Carter had four trips to the United States Civil War sites\, which provided him with up to date insights from shipwrecks into the technologies developed in the period from 1861 to 1865. \n \nDr Carter’s is wearing the Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers tie. The insignia is a divers helmet. SUMMARY:WA Chapter - Monthly Meeting with Guest Speaker Clive Senior "The Scourge of the Seas: Piracy in the post-Elizabethan world"
DESCRIPTION:The English pirates of the early seventeenth Century\, were the direct successors of the well-known privateers and pirates of Elizabeth I’s reign\, such as Drake and Hawkins. For almost twenty years\, their depredations covered the whole of the North Atlantic\, and several gained infamy by establishing themselves in North African ports\, where they helped the Turkish dependencies in their wars against Christian countries in the Mediterranean.  \n  \nClive completed his PhD on piracy at Bristol University in the UK\, and subsequently published a book on the subject: ‘A Nation of Pirates.’ With the increasing interest in piracy\, both Clive’s book and his thesis have been digitised by Bristol University. Clive’s working life in Perth has been as a lawyer and mediator\, specialising in mining law\, native title and Aboriginal heritage. \n  \nThe talk is on Monday June 21st at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park on Davies Road. DESCRIPTION:The Naval Historical Society’s talk is: HMS HOOD – 80 YEARS ON \nHMS Hood\, the largest Battleship in the world at the time of its construction in 1918\, was sunk 80 years ago on May 24th\, 1941\, by the German Battleship Bismarck. \nThe May monthly meeting will commemorate and remember this occasion and the 1\,415 Royal Navy officers and crew who lost their lives in only three minutes when HMS Hood sank. \nThe speakers will be Nigel Rogers\, the President of the NHS\, and Warren Kerr AM\, Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia\, who is a partner at the architectural firm Hames Sharley. \nWarren Kerr AM is related to Captain Ralph Kerr CBE\, who was the Captain of HMS Hood when the ship was sunk in the Strait of Denmark\, which is a channel partially in the Arctic Circle lying between Greenland and Iceland. \nThe talk is on Monday May 17th at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont.\nParking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park on Davies Road.\nThere is a $5 Admin fee\, and a cash bar is open before and after the talk. SUMMARY:Naval Seapower in Miniature
DESCRIPTION:Naval Seapower in Miniature\n28 June – 1 July 2019\nWA Shipwrecks Museum\nNaval Seapower in Miniature \nI was born in 1957 in Perth Western Australia and started\nmodelling mainly aircraft interspersed with ships when I was\n5. When I was 16\, I wanted to build a model of HMAS Perth\nand decided to attack an Airfix 1/600 scale model of HMS\nAjax. When completed\, if you closed both eyes and squinted\,\nit almost looked like HMAS Perth. I became a little more\nadept at remodelling Airfix kits until the day I discovered\nbalsa wood! I started building warships to the 1/600 scale\nwhen I was in my early teens and then one day purchased a\nset of plans for the modified Leander Class cruiser HMAS\nPerth (I) that were drawn to 1/192 scale. This combined with\nthe discovery of balsa wood set me on the path of accurate\nscale model scratch building that has seen me build well\nover 100 ships curing my career as a ship modeller. I have\nalways kept to the same scale which has had its good and bad\npoints. The scale is large enough to provide the opportunity\nfor detail but small enough that I don’t have to house them\nin a huge shed. If building a ship from a class of ships\, I will\n(where applicable) try and choose one that sank\, this being\nmy way of paying tribute to those who went down with the\nship. Unfortunately\, this can be quite challenging\, as there is\nusually a dearth of photographs that I can use as a reference.\nI use photos as much as I can\, as I have found over the years\nthat many plans are drawn incorrectly and this is usually only\ndiscovered when you are half way through the build.\nMy passion is mainly for British and Australian warships\, but\nI also enjoy building ships that take my fancy\, for example\,\nI have a Roman bireme\, RMS Queen Mary\, Raleigh’s ship\nthe Revenge and the two Dutch cruisers De Ruyter and Java\ninvolved in the Battle of the Java Sea. The largest ship in my\ncollection is the RMS Queen Mary\, with the smallest being\nHMAS Acute. I also have HMS Victoria\, a pre-dreadnought\,\nHMS Fife\, a County class destroyer\, Kinabalu\, a coastal trader\nfrom Borneo\, HMAS Sydney (III)\, the aircraft carrier HMS\nEagle\, HMS Monmouth sunk in WWI to name but a few. My\nmost challenging model has been that of the wreck of HMAS\nSydney (II) depicted on 20th November 1941 a few days after\nshe sank. Building this model and seeing the utter destruction\nof the ship made me realise how much punishment she\nreceived and how heroic the crew must have been to almost\nget the battered wreck home to Fremantle. I would also like\nto thank my long-suffering wife\, Jill\, for putting up with the\nloss of more and more wall space. Whenever I finish another\nmodel\, she looks at it\, smiles\, makes some nice comment\nabout the model and asks “Where is that one going to go?”\,\nalthough sometimes she doesn’t ask\, but gives me that look.\nGerry Westenberg

SUMMARY:The meeting of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay in April\, 1802
DESCRIPTION:This address will be given by Dr Robert Pearce\, Vice President of the WA Chapter. \n  \nThe location of this historic encounter is Encounter Bay which is a bay in South Australia located on the state’s south central coast about 100 kilometres (62 mi) south of the state capital of Adelaide. It was named by Matthew Flinders after his encounter on 8 April 1802 with Nicolas Baudin\, the commander of the Baudin expedition of 1800–03. It is the site of both the mouth of the River Murray and the regional city of Victor Harbor.  It is one of four ‘historic bays’ located on the South Australian coast. \n  \nA $5 donation will cover costs\, thank you!
