DESCRIPTION:Members\, partners\, & friends.\nWould you like to know more about Royal Australian Navy (RAN) activities and facilities in Sydney Harbour from 1788 to the present\, especially during WW II? \nYou are invited to join the Naval Historical Society of Australia for a three-hour cruise east of the Harbour Bridge. The Society is a non-profit organization run by volunteers to preserve and honour our naval history. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life. A complementary booklet with lots of information and photos is provided as a souvenir. \nThe sites you will see and learn about include: – \nDawes Point. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. SUMMARY:The culture at sea & ashore of the RAN and RNZN since 1974
DESCRIPTION:Overview: \nDesmond will address the dramatic and far-reaching changes that have occurred in the culture at sea and ashore of the RAN and the RN and RNZN since he joined in 1974. \nThis colourful and fully illustrated address will consider the impact on Navy culture of the changes in expectations of leadership\, the impact of the first WRANS and the later integration of women into the fleet. He will also discuss the end of the culture of heavy drinking\, the change away from the steam driven ships\, and the assertion of Australian naval traditions and the ongoing change to a more egalitarian and diverse workforce. \nWhile acknowledging the great RAN leaders of the past he will explain how and why Navy culture from last century had to change and evolve and become fit for purpose in the twenty first century. \nPresenter – Desmond Woods OAM \nDesmond Woods served for more than four decades in the RNZN\, the RN the British Army and the RAN as an education officer teaching naval and military history to junior officers.  From 2003 – 2010 he was the Course Officer for the Strategic Studies Course at the RANC. \nHe was the Military Support Officer to the Defence Community Organization in Canberra for two years before joining the staff of the RAN’s International Fleet Review in 2013.  This was followed by a year as Staff officer Centenary of Anzac (Navy) before joining CN’s personal staff as his Research Officer.  After time as a Heritage Research Officer at the RAN’s Seapower Centre in Canberra he became the Navy’s Bereavement Liaison Office. \nHe is a councilor of the Australian Naval Institute and the Australian Institute for International Affairs (ACT) a member of the United Services Institute (ACT) and is an author and a regular contributor to Australian and international naval historical journals. \nDetails \nDate and Time:         11:00am\, Wednesday 12th August 2026 (Sydney time) \nClick the link below to join the ZOOM meeting. \nJoin Here\nPlease Join us

DESCRIPTION:Overview –\nCHINA – THE AVOIDABLE WAR – This presentation looks at the unthinkable possibility of China invading Taiwan and how that might play out in the near future. Other areas covered are the importance of sea power to Xi Jinping\, how the USA and its allies are prepared for a conflict\, new technologies of sea warfare and ways the nations involved might be able to avoid such an unwanted war. \nPresenter – Kez Hasanic\nKez has had a lifelong interest in History and in particular military and naval history. Before retirement in 2018 he served 40 years as a history teacher\nat Kogarah High School. During that time\, he taught several students who would win the NSW Premier’s Award for HSC History\, was closely involved with the History Faculty at Sydney University for teacher training and was also involved in creating user scenarios for several historical military and naval computer simulations. \nCurrently Kez is active as a volunteer at the Australian National Maritime Museum with the museum’s speakers’ group. SUMMARY:Health support for RAN operations 1901-1976:  Past lessons for the present and future
DESCRIPTION:Overview: \nThe thesis on which this presentation is based fills significant gaps in the Australian military historiography\, as to how the RAN’s health services supported its peacetime and warlike military\, diplomatic and constabulary missions operations between Federation in 1901 and the instigation of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in 1976. The imperative to this end is driven by a longstanding and ongoing misapprehension within Defence and elsewhere that the RAN’s health services only need to treat seagoing battle casualties on the same terms as their Army and Air Force counterparts. However\, Arthur Graham Butler’s seminal First World War official history explained how military health services have three inextricably linked ‘purposes’: besides providing treatment services\, they entail facilitating operational capability and returning service personnel to civilian life. This presentation describes how and why\, despite having been neglected since\, Butler’s ‘purposes’ remain relevant to the RAN’s ability to contribute to future ADF peacetime as well as warlike operations. \nPresenter: Dr Neil Westphalen \nMBBS (Adel) DipAvMed MPH PhD FRACGP FACAsM FAFOEM (RACP) psc \nCommander\, Royal Australian Navy \n Dr Neil Westphalen graduated from the University of Adelaide as a medical practitioner in 1985 and joined the RAN in 1987. His postgraduate qualifications include Fellowships in general practice\, occupational and environmental medicine and aerospace medicine\, a Master of Public Health from Curtin University and a Diploma of Aviation Medicine via King’s College London. He is also a RAN Staff College graduate and was a awarded a history PhD from UNSW Canberra in June 2025\, entitled ‘Constant Care: health support for Australian naval operations 1901-1976’. \nCommander Westphalen’s seagoing service included Swan\, Stalwart\, Success\, Sydney\, Perth\, Manoora and Choules\, during which he undertook DAMASK VII\, RIMPAC 1996\, TANAGER\, RELEX II\, GEMSBOK\, TALISMAN SABRE 2007 and RENDERSAFE 2014. His clinical roles ashore included Cerberus and Penguin\, thence Kuttabul\, Albatross\, Stirling and the Submarine and Underwater Medicine Unit—West as Senior Medical Officer. Staff positions included Director Health at what became Joint Operations Command\, Director Navy Occupational and Environmental Health\, Director of Navy Health\, Staff Officer 1 Medical Employment Classification Advisory and Review Services\, and Fleet Medical Officer. On transferring to the RAN Reserve in 2016\, Commander Westphalen undertook staff roles for Exercise KAKADU 16\, the Director-General Navy Safety and Environment Policy Coordination\, and the Navy Personnel Career Management Agency. \nNeil is widowed\, with three children and his first grandchild. \nDetail: \nDate and Time:1100\, Wednesday 17h. SUMMARY:The Fog of War: An Author’s Perspective upon the Writing of Military History.
DESCRIPTION:Overview –  \nIn this presentation Angus Britts elaborates upon his experience in military studies authorship since the publication of his first book in 2017. By way of explanation\, Angus outlines a series of key aspects in the preparation and fulfilment of a writing project\, from topic selection\, the scope of enquiry\, and the use of source material to the retention of a publisher\, selection of a target readership\, and the writing process itself. Also covered in his presentation are some thoughts on trends and standards within Australian military authorship\, and the necessity for objectivity as the central guiding motivation behind any credible project endeavours in the military history genre. In spite of the nature of the topic\, photographic and video material will be presented as a means of illustrating the author’s thinking. \nPresenter – Angus Britts \nAngus is a qualified historian who has authored four books about military history\, the third of which\, Ikara: Australia’s Cold War Wonder Weapon\, has been published on behalf of the Naval Historical Society of Australia. His principal areas of prior research have involved studies of Australian and Imperial defence prior to the mid-point of the Pacific War\, and the role of naval airpower in the Pacific from the British\, American\, and Japanese perspectives. In 2021 two of his works received honourable mentions following nomination for the inaugural award of the Sam Bateman Prize by the Australian Naval Institute. His latest publication\, Let Fall the Sakura: The Decimation of Japanese Naval Airpower\, is due for release by Naval Institute Press in the United States during the second half of 2027. A volunteer with the Society\, his other interests include politics\, international relations\, and various sports. DESCRIPTION:Overview –\nAdmiral Sir Victor ‘VAT’ Smith AC KBE CB DSC MiD RAN is widely known as the “Father” of Australia’s  Fleet Air Arm. Examining his extraordinary life\, from a thirteen year old joining the Royal Australian Naval College in 1927 to his retirement in 1975\, charts the career of a ‘stolid slow type’ of junior officer who survived being shot down twice and the sinking of Ark Royal and Canberra\, to become one of the RAN’s most consequential officers.\n\nPresenter: Graeme Lunn \nOriginally from Melbourne Graeme was a reserve naval diver while VAT Smith was still serving.  Joining the Royal Australian Naval College in 1976 he later served as a seaman officer in Melbourne and Swan before pilots course. Graeme’s Fleet Air Arm postings included HC723 and HU816 Squadrons with the venerable Wessex in its counter-terrorist role\, a tour with the Multinational Force in the Sinai and an exchange posting with the RNZN flying Wasp helicopters. SUMMARY:The hidden staggering numbers behind Australia’s Coastal world – WW II
DESCRIPTION:Overview:  \nIn WWII\, there were 1\,993 enemy attacks around Australia. Scores of submarine and ship actions\, and many hundreds of individual enemy air actions\, from Darwin to Hobart\, from Townsville to Melbourne\, saw thousands of lives lost. Yet Aussies know little of it. \nThe battle began with German surface raiders laying mines and attacking ships. It continued with submarine actions\, and intensified with air attacks\, at their height covering thousands of kilometres of coast. \nThis talk brings the viewer into a long struggle between German and Japanese forces and those of the USA\, Britain’s and Australia’s\, that saw scores of ships sunk and thousands of lives lost. Many of the stories are tragic: from fierce actions such as the loss of the cruiser Sydney with 645 lives which went down fighting against the raider Kormoran\, to death on a quiet beach in South Australia where a mine blew up and killed two men\, to the lonely end of a priest captured by an enemy floatplane and flown away to be executed. \nSome are tales of mistakes and misadventure\, such as the bad decisions by senior defence commanders in the Sydney midget submarine raids which were remedied in part by the bravery – still unrewarded – of the small ship commanders which fought the submarines to their end. Others are newly revealed – the resolute attacks by two RAAF bombers \nPresenter: Dr Tom Lewis OAM RAN (Rtd.) – Please edit if required \nTom Lewis has combined three interesting career paths to make him one of Australia’s foremost military historians. He has integrated a 20-year RAN track\, primarily as an intelligence analyst\, with high school teaching\, and work as an historian. His 35-year writing career followed time as a journalist\, with his first publication Wrecks in Darwin Waters\, which was followed by an analysis in Darwin’s Submarine I-124 of the first successful RAN submarine action of WWII\, resulting in the sinking of the Japanese 80-man boat which still lies outside Darwin today. Zero Hour in Broome examined the second biggest air raid on Australia\, and The Submarine Six presented biographies of the six who had RAN submarines named after them. Lethality in Combat\, his most controversial work\, analysed the realities of battlefield combat\, and has just been re-published as The Truth of War. \nCarrier Attack\, an extensive technical analysis of the first Darwin air raid\, revealed many unknown aspects of that assault\, and Teddy Sheean VC chronicled not only the fight of this naval hero but the fight to get him the Victoria Cross he deserved. The Empire Strikes South\, an account of all Japanese air raids made across northern Australia\, showed the attacks were far more widespread than first thought. Atomic Salvation: “how the atomic bombs saved the lives of 30 million”\, attracted some criticism but much praise. Tom’s book on the Sydney midget submarine raid in 1942 was published in 2022. It highlighted the two-fold scandal of first the senior commanders escaping any blame for the submarines getting inside the harbour\, and not being met with sufficient measures\, and second\, that none of the small ship commanders were given honours for their sinking of two of the three. Attack on Sydney Harbour was released by Big Sky. \nIn 2023 Avonmore Books published Bombers North. This is a coverage of the Allied efforts to prosecute the war against the Japanese Empire from 1942. USAAF\, RAAF and Dutch bombers flew out of northern Australia in hundreds of missions to fight back against possible invasion.  The Sinking of HMAS Sydney was also published that year. It’s a detailed look at what it was like to live and serve on board a WWII cruiser: eating\, drinking\, working\, fighting and all. It finishes up with a detailed look at the final action of this gallant ship against the German raider Kormoran\, and an examination of the theories as to why Sydney disappeared. \nCyclone Warriors – the Armed Forces in Cyclone Tracy was released at the end of 2024 to commemorate 50 years since the disaster. The former Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove wrote the introduction – he was in Darwin post-cyclone in his early days as an Army officer. \nTom is presently working on The Secret Submarine\, an analysis of the sinking of I-178 by two RAAF Beaufort bombers off Sydney in 1943. The Society is a non-profit organization run by volunteers to preserve and honour our naval history. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life. A complementary booklet with lots of information and photos is provided as a souvenir. \nThe sites you will see and learn about include: – \nDawes Point. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. Home of the six OBERON class submarines for 30 years and the torpedo factory established during WW2. However\, many Sydneysiders know little about this watershed event. It was the first attack on Sydney and its impact changed Australia from a quiet backwater of the Second World War to a vital springboard for the defeat of Japan. \nThis cruise will provide a detailed description of events leading up to and during the attack. \nYour cruise boat will take you to sites on the Harbour where key events occurred and a comprehensive description of how those events during the fateful night of 31st May&1st June 1942 unfolded. The story will be told by expert narrators from the Naval Historical Society of Australia. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life.
