DESCRIPTION:Members\, partners\, & friends.\nWould you like to know more about Royal Australian Navy (RAN) activities and facilities in Sydney Harbour from 1788 to the present\, especially during WW II? \nYou are invited to join the Naval Historical Society of Australia for a three-hour cruise east of the Harbour Bridge. The Society is a non-profit organization run by volunteers to preserve and honour our naval history. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life. A complementary booklet with lots of information and photos is provided as a souvenir. \nThe sites you will see and learn about include: – \nDawes Point. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. Home of the six OBERON class submarines for 30 years and the torpedo factory established during WW2. SUMMARY:Construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge  Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Overview –\nAlthough the transformation of Sydney’s public transport in the 1920s was a city-wide project\, the single aspect which caught the public’s attention was the building of the bridge across the harbour. From late 1928 until August 1930 the people of the city watched the two halves of the arch reach out from north and south\, hoping that the engineers knew what they were doing and that the steel arms would meet in the middle. This talk looks specifically at just the building of the arch and the sophisticated creeper cranes which made it all happen. \n Presenter – Bill Phippen\n Bill Phippen is a qualified civil engineer who late in his career moved into history and engineering heritage.  He has had five books published – The Hawkesbury River Railway Bridges\, By Muscle of Man and Horse\, building the railway under Sydney 1916-1932\, from Eddy Avenue to Menin Gate – the Great Sydney Station Honour Board\, The Timber Truss Railway Bridges of NSW\, and Steam at its Pinnacle – the photography of Norman Joseph Read. His current research effort is the centenary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge whose construction began in 1922. \nThe Hawkesbury River Railway Bridges received the Colin Crisp Award for documentation of heritage from Engineers Australia in 2019. \nBill was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2013 for service to people with disability through the charity Technical Aid to the Disabled. SUMMARY:Fairmile Launches in the RAN
DESCRIPTION:Overview –\nAndrew will address a lesser-known aspect of Australia’s naval history during World War II: the short-lived story of the Fairmile ‘B’ Motor Launches that served in the RAN from 1942-47.  While battles in the Pacific conjure images of corvettes\, destroyers and cruisers\, the nimble and versatile Fairmiles played a key role in supporting operations around Australia’s vulnerable northern coastline\, often into enemy-held territory. \nHe will cover the rationale for acquiring these boats\, where and how they were built and the capabilities they provided\, manned largely by RAN Volunteer Reserves.  Training at a dedicated Fairmile School in Sydney preceded their deployment to separate flotillas located at key Australian ports\, as well as in hostile locations close to the enemy in New Guinea.  The boats were small\, and the crews often had to deal with mechanical failures and the constant threat of attack.  Living conditions onboard these cramped little ships were tough and maintaining morale was challenging\, yet their crews displayed remarkable resilience and dedication.  Some first-hand accounts from those who served in these ships will add to the unusual Fairmile story. \nPresenter – Andrew Mackinnon\nAndrew joined the Royal Australian Naval College in 1963 and served in a variety of exciting Seaman Officer command and management roles and spent 38 varied and rewarding years in uniform at sea and ashore\, including command of the patrol boat HMAS Wollongong and Navy’s shore establishments at HMAS Cairns and HMAS Coonawarra\, and later as Defence Adviser in New Zealand. \nHe is a former Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist officer.  In 2001 he joined the Australian Public Service and served a further 17 years in Navy Headquarters\, as the Director Navy Infrastructure Plans. For the next 16 years he worked as the Director of Navy Infrastructure Plans in Navy Headquarters in Canberra.  After settling in Melbourne in 2017\, he took the opportunity to broaden his interest in naval history by joining the Naval Historical Society of Australia\, and in early 2021 he became the President of the Victoria Chapter. He has helped articulate the naval community’s interests in preserving Osborne House (the site of the first RAN College in 1913-14) and the associated Maritime Museum Collection in Geelong and hopes to assist in rationalising the content and display of naval museum assets held in Victoria. \nDetail\nDate and Time:1100\, Wednesday 22nd. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. Home of the six OBERON class submarines for 30 years and the torpedo factory established during WW2. SUMMARY:Inoue Shigeyoshi and the Air Power Navy
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nIn January 1941 Vice-Admiral Inoue Shigeyoshi of the Imperial Japanese Navy issued a call for a radical change of Japanese naval policy\, including the abolition of the construction of the Yamato-class super-battleship program then underway. Arguing that traditionalists within the Navy were reacting blindly to American naval rearmament plans\, Inoue\, one of the senior airpower advocates within the IJN\, argued that control of the air and thus the sea could be achieved by a land-based air force without the need for surface ships\, including Japan’s own aircraft-carrier fleet. \nThis podcast will explore Inoue’s proposal and its reception by renowned American post-war historian Mark Peattie\, detailing Inoue’s ideas on the domination of naval warfare by aircraft in partnership with submarines\, and the applicability of his ideas to Japan’s military situation in the Second World War. After due and fair consideration\, Peattie characterised Inoue’s concept as overly simplistic misunderstanding of carrier warfare. Did the circumstances which prevailed following the great carrier battles of 1942 support this view\, or was Inoue correct in believing that Japan’s situation demanded such a far-sighted solution. \nPresenter – Angus Britts \nAngus is a qualified historian who has authored three books about military history\, the third of which\, Ikara: Australia’s Cold War Wonder Weapon\, has been published on behalf of the Naval Historical Society of Australia. His principal areas of research involve the development of the ‘Singapore Strategy’ from 1921 – 1942\, and the rise of airpower at sea during the same period. A volunteer with the Society\, his other interest include politics\, international relations\, and the ongoing trials and tribulations of Australia’s national cricket and rugby teams. DESCRIPTION:Members\, partners\, & friends.\nWould you like to know more about Royal Australian Navy (RAN) activities and facilities in Sydney Harbour from 1788 to the present\, especially during WW II? \nYou are invited to join the Naval Historical Society of Australia for a three-hour cruise east of the Harbour Bridge. The Society is a non-profit organization run by volunteers to preserve and honour our naval history. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life. A complementary booklet with lots of information and photos is provided as a souvenir. \nThe sites you will see and learn about include: – \nDawes Point. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. Home of the six OBERON class submarines for 30 years and the torpedo factory established during WW2.
