DESCRIPTION:Members\, partners\, & friends.\nWould you like to know more about Royal Australian Navy (RAN) activities and facilities in Sydney Harbour from 1788 to the present\, especially during WW II? \nYou are invited to join the Naval Historical Society of Australia for a three-hour cruise east of the Harbour Bridge. The Society is a non-profit organization run by volunteers to preserve and honour our naval history. \nA comprehensive commentary is provided supported by information and photos on TVs to bring the commentary to life. A complementary booklet with lots of information and photos is provided as a souvenir. \nThe sites you will see and learn about include: – \nDawes Point. The story of the observatory built by Lt William Dawes and the construction of the gun battery. \nSydney Cove. The story of Fort Macquarie and the Navy activities to protect ships and the colony after the arrival of the first fleet. \nGarden Island. The first use of Garden Island as a garden and its later development. The construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock was second largest project after the Snowy Mountain Scheme and larger than the construction of the Harbour bridge.  The story of the hammerhead crane and the role of HMAS KUTTABUL. The decision in 1987 to establish two Navy bases – Fleet Base East and Fleet Base West to cover both the Pacific and Indian oceans. \nHMAS RUSHCUTTER. One of the oldest RAN shore bases\, commissioned in 1920. A Naval Reserve training facility for anti-submarine warfare\, diving\, and radar. \nClark Island. The storage of gun barrels during WW II. The Japanese midget submarines were also brought here after they were salvaged. \nRose Bay. The story of HMAS TINGIRA that trained over 3\,000 sailors from 1912 to 1927. \nWatson’s Bay. HMAS WATSON the training centre for maritime warfare. Watson’s Bay was the home base for pilot boats and the lifeboat over the years. \nGeorges Head. The location of the western end of the anti-submarine boom net during WW II. \nChowder Bay. The base to protect the Harbour with mines during the 1880’s. Now a fuel installation for the RAN. \nBradley’s Head. Ships were degaussed here during WW II to protect them against magnetic mines. The story of our first battle and first victory involving HMAS SYDNEY I and the SMS EMDEN. \nNeutral Bay – Sub Base Platypus. Home of the six OBERON class submarines for 30 years and the torpedo factory established during WW2. SUMMARY:Bradleys Head Tour: Sydney Harbour in War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:From arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the present Port Jackson has been home to naval units. Initially ships were detached from the Royal Navy to provide Naval defence until 1859. Then followed the New South Wales Colonial Navy\, the Commonwealth Naval Force from Federation and from 1911\, the Royal Australian Navy. \nThe aim of this short walking tour on Bradleys Head where its own military history and stunning vistas combine\, our knowledgeable guides will tell stories along a timeline from first European settlement to the end of WW2. These stories of naval events from the 20th century also connect with the military and naval activity on the Harbour from the First Fleet to the establishment of the RAN. \nTour Information\nFrequency: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month February to November. \nLocation: Bradleys Head on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour lies at the end of Bradleys Head Road which is accessed by following Military Road from Mosman. Being part of the Sydney Harbour National Park access fees are applicable. Information is available from the NPWS website. \nGroup Size: from 10 to 20 maximum \nTime: This tour commences at 10.30am and concludes by 12.00 pm at the same point. \nMeeting Point: The tour starting location is the circular Navy Memorial on Bradley’s Head adjacent the mast of HMAS Sydney. \nMobility: The pathways and areas visited during this tour are generally flat and easily accessible. The total distance walked is less than one kilometre. \nFootwear: Sensible footwear is a must. \nHats\, sunglasses\, sunscreen and bottled water: The tour is outdoors. Come prepared\, even if the weather is overcast. \nPlanning your trip: The best method of travel to Bradley’s Head is motor vehicle. Car parking for a limited number of vehicles is available on the lower level adjacent the memorials. Additional parking is available a short walk away on the access road into Bradleys Head. \nCancellation Policy: Although it is possible for the tour to proceed rail\, hail or shine\, the lack of shelter if inclement weather is forecast may determine cancellation or postponement of the tour. If this is necessary the guide will contact the tour organiser late on the previous day. DESCRIPTION:From arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the present Port Jackson has been home to naval units. Initially ships were detached from the Royal Navy to provide Naval defence until 1859. Then followed the New South Wales Colonial Navy\, the Commonwealth Naval Force from Federation and from 1911\, the Royal Australian Navy. \nThe aim of this short walking tour on Bradleys Head where its own military history and stunning vistas combine\, our knowledgeable guides will tell stories along a timeline from first European settlement to the end of WW2. These stories of naval events from the 20th century also connect with the military and naval activity on the Harbour from the First Fleet to the establishment of the RAN. \nTour Information\nFrequency: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month February to November. \nLocation: Bradleys Head on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour lies at the end of Bradleys Head Road which is accessed by following Military Road from Mosman. Being part of the Sydney Harbour National Park access fees are applicable. DESCRIPTION:From arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the present Port Jackson has been home to naval units. Initially ships were detached from the Royal Navy to provide Naval defence until 1859. Then followed the New South Wales Colonial Navy\, the Commonwealth Naval Force from Federation and from 1911\, the Royal Australian Navy. \nThe aim of this short walking tour on Bradleys Head where its own military history and stunning vistas combine\, our knowledgeable guides will tell stories along a timeline from first European settlement to the end of WW2. These stories of naval events from the 20th century also connect with the military and naval activity on the Harbour from the First Fleet to the establishment of the RAN. \nTour Information\nFrequency: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month February to November. \nLocation: Bradleys Head on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour lies at the end of Bradleys Head Road which is accessed by following Military Road from Mosman. Being part of the Sydney Harbour National Park access fees are applicable. Information is available from the NPWS website. \nGroup Size: from 10 to 20 maximum \nTime: This tour commences at 10.30am and concludes by 12.00 pm at the same point. \nMeeting Point: The tour starting location is the circular Navy Memorial on Bradley’s Head adjacent the mast of HMAS Sydney. \nMobility: The pathways and areas visited during this tour are generally flat and easily accessible. The total distance walked is less than one kilometre. \nFootwear: Sensible footwear is a must. \nHats\, sunglasses\, sunscreen and bottled water: The tour is outdoors. Come prepared\, even if the weather is overcast. \nPlanning your trip: The best method of travel to Bradley’s Head is motor vehicle. Car parking for a limited number of vehicles is available on the lower level adjacent the memorials. Additional parking is available a short walk away on the access road into Bradleys Head. \nCancellation Policy: Although it is possible for the tour to proceed rail\, hail or shine\, the lack of shelter if inclement weather is forecast may determine cancellation or postponement of the tour. If this is necessary the guide will contact the tour organiser late on the previous day. DESCRIPTION:Sydney has an association with submarines that started in 1914 with the arrival of the first two Royal Australian Navy submarines – AE1 and AE2. \nThis association with torpedoes\, submarines and submariners has continued ever since. \nAs Sydney Harbour was the only place in Australia to have ships attacked by submarines there is a story to tell. \nThis tour of Sub Base Platypus led by knowledgeable Naval Historical Society Guides describes: \n\nthe site history and story of sub base HMAS Platypus\,\ndifferent classes of submarines operated by the RAN over a century\,\nthe Torpedo Factory which operated on the Platypus site\,\n1942 Japanese midget submarine attack and\nthe submarine service and life of a submariner.\n\n  \nTour Information\nAlso see society shop for other available dates for this tour \nLocation: Sub Base Platypus is located at 120 High Street\, North Sydney NSW 2060. \nTime: The tour commences at 10.30am and concludes at 12.30 pm inside Sub Base Platypus. \nGroup Size: from 10 to 25 maximum \nMeeting Point: The tour starting location is the submariner’s memorial on the northern end of the Sub Base Platypus wharf. \nMobility: Sub Base Platypus is on several levels.
