SUMMARY:Hollywood (Repatriation) Hospital\, Perth WA.
DESCRIPTION:Overview – \nAs we approach ANZAC day\, this presentation reminds us of the important role that hospitals have played in Australia to care for the sick and wounded of our Defence Forces\, who have been involved in active combat service in War Zones. The focus will be specifically on the history of the Hollywood Military Repatriation Hospital in Perth – Western Australia\, which was first established in early 1941. \nAll the wards are named after recipients of either the Victoria Cross or the George Cross and who had some connection to Western Australia. A description of some of the recipients of these medals for valour will also be covered. \nPresenter – Nigel Rogers\nNigel Rogers spent most of his career\, some thirty years\, with Citi/Citibank\, the US Global Bank Headquartered in New York. Nigel worked in various senior positions and was based in London\, Zürich\, Switzerland\, and Edinburgh\, and he travelled extensively with work throughout the world. Nigel retired and emigrated from the UK to Perth\, Western Australia\, following his marriage to Dr Heather Rogers in July 2012\, after the loss of his first wife. \nIn retirement\, one of Nigel’s main interests is in Naval and Military History. Nigel was elected President of the Naval Historical Society of Australia – WA Chapter\, in September 2020\, and then retired from this position in September 2024. \nNigel is the `Resident Historian’ at Capital Community Radio in Perth: https://capitalcommunityradio.com/interviews.html and undertakes research to give Naval and Military History talks on the radio\, as well as at meetings of various Societies and Institutions. Nigel is a Knight Commander of Grace of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller in the WA Priory\, whose main objective is to raise funds for the homeless in Perth\, WA. \nNigel’s father joined the British Diplomatic Service after the War in 1946\, with a first posting to Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, where Nigel was born. Nigel then spent many years living in and visiting many countries in the world with his parents. Nigel’s interest in Naval History stems from inheriting his father’s collection of Naval History books and hearing his father’s stories about his Royal Navy Service throughout World War II\, that included serving in the Atlantic\, the Mediterranean and on the island of Malta during the Siege in World War II. \nDetail – \nDate and Time – 1100\, Wednesday 16th. SUMMARY:Malta: A Childhood Under Siege
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nMargaret Staples was nine years old at the beginning of 1939 when her father\, Major Sam Staples\, was posted to the British colony of Malta with the Royal Engineers. With swimming every day\, blue skies and balmy weather\, Margaret and her four siblings thought they were in paradise. \nEverything changed when WWII broke out. Hitler wanted to take control of Malta for its strategic position\, right in the middle of the Mediterranean. To this end\, the Axis powers dropped more bombs on this tiny island than anywhere else on the planet. When that didn’t work\, they decided to sink all the supply ships and force capitulation through starvation. As Garrison Engineer\, Sam was in charge of all building works on the island. When war broke out he was asked to turn some tunnels under Valletta into a large bunker from which the Allies could safely run the war. Every military installation on the surface was being flattened by enemy bombs. This challenging\, top secret assignment took nearly three years to complete.Linda’s book Malta: A Childhood Under Siege is the story of one family of seven surviving in a war zone\, through the eyes of her mother Margaret \nPresenter:\nLinda Peek is a writer\, blogger and businesswoman. Born in the United Kingdom\, she has been involved in international diplomacy through her husband’s work as an Australian diplomat. Linda has lived in Switzerland\, Israel\, Malaysia\, South Africa\, Chile\, France and Denmark\, with postings in Canberra\, Australia in between. \nWhile living in Chile\, she was Food Editor for an English newspaper\, writing a popular weekly column called “The Good Life.” She was a member of the Circle of Gastronomic Writers of Chile and a food judge. She runs her own business\, which handles imports and exports of food ingredients. Since 2011 she has been writing about food in her weekly blog Café Cat. \nShe currently lives in Canberra\, Australia \nDetail: \nDate and Time:1100\, Wednesday 12th. SUMMARY:Darwin - The Navy & Cyclone Tracy
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nThe Zoom presentation “The Navy in Cyclone Tracy” examines not only the sinking of HMAS Arrow\, but also the loss of a WWII Fairmile patrol boat\, and the role of the RAN in Operation Navy Help Darwin\, their biggest peacetime operation ever. Tom also argues strongly for the presentation of the National Emergency medal to all those who were involved in relief operations for the city. It is taken from his latest work Cyclone Warriors – the Armed Forces in Cyclone Tracy. \nPresenter: Dr Tom Lewis OAM RAN (Rtd.)\nTom Lewis has combined three interesting career paths to make him one of Australia’s foremost military historians. He has integrated a 20-year RAN track\, primarily as an intelligence analyst\, with high school teaching\, and work as an historian. His 35-year writing career followed time as a journalist\, with his first publication Wrecks in Darwin Waters\, which was followed by an analysis in Darwin’s Submarine I-124 of the first successful RAN submarine action of WWII\, resulting in the sinking of the Japanese 80-man boat which still lies outside Darwin today. Zero Hour in Broomeexamined the second biggest air raid on Australia\, and The Submarine Six presented biographies of the six who had RAN submarines named after them. Lethality in Combat\, his most controversial work\, analysed the realities of battlefield combat\, and has just been re-published as The Truth of War. \nCarrier Attack\, an extensive technical analysis of the first Darwin air raid\, revealed many unknown aspects of that assault\, and Teddy Sheean VC chronicled not only the fight of this naval hero but the fight to get him the Victoria Cross he deserved. The Empire Strikes South\, an account of all Japanese air raids made across northern Australia\, showed the attacks were far more widespread than first thought. Atomic Salvation: “how the atomic bombs saved the lives of 30 million”\, attracted some criticism but much praise. Tom’s book on the Sydney midget submarine raid in 1942 was published in 2022. It highlighted the two-fold scandal of first the senior commanders escaping any blame for the submarines getting inside the harbour\, and not being met with sufficient measures\, and second\, that none of the small ship commanders were given honours for their sinking of two of the three. Attack on Sydney Harbour was released by Big Sky. \nIn 2023 Avonmore Books published Bombers North. This is a coverage of the Allied efforts to prosecute the war against the Japanese Empire from 1942. USAAF\, RAAF and Dutch bombers flew out of northern Australia in hundreds of missions to fight back against possible invasion.  The Sinking of HMAS Sydney was also published that year. It’s a detailed look at what it was like to live and serve on board a WWII cruiser: eating\, drinking\, working\, fighting and all. It finishes up with a detailed look at the final action of this gallant ship against the German raider Kormoran\, and an examination of the theories as to why Sydney disappeared. \nCyclone Warriors – the Armed Forces in Cyclone Tracy was released at the end of 2024 to commemorate 50 years since the disaster. The former Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove wrote the introduction – he was in Darwin post-cyclone in his early days as an Army officer. \nTom is presently working on The Secret Submarine\, an analysis of the sinking of I-178 by two RAAF Beaufort bombers off Sydney in 1943. His Order of Australia medal was presented for services to naval history. \nDetails –\nDate and Time: 1100 Wednesday 12th February 2025 (Sydney time)\nPlease Join Us

SUMMARY:Victorian Chapter - Monthly Meeting with Guest Speaker Commander Doug Stevens RAN (Rtd) - “RAN Submarine Basing”
DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nMonthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 24 October 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker Commander Doug Stevens RAN (Rtd) \n  “RAN Submarine Basing” \nDoug spent 21 years as an Engineer on full time service in the Royal Australian Navy\, and many years later commenced a further nine years of part time service.  In 2010 he was commissioned by Head of the Future Submarines Program\, RADM Moffitt\, to research and write a future-submarines basing study.  The associated report\, submitted in November 2011\, underpins today’s decision making by Defence about the creation of an east coast submarines home port. \nThe 2011 report was written around Defence’s planned acquisition at that time of twelve diesel-electric submarines.  Its stated purpose was to inform submarine homeport decision making which was anticipated to take place from 2021 onwards.  It shortlisted in descending order\, nine east coast homeport options. \nThe cancellation of the twelve diesel-electric submarine program and its replacement by eight nuclear propelled submarines reduces the east-coast homeport options\, according to Doug\, from nine to five.  Doug updated his earlier report in June this year with a related article in the Naval Officers Club Newsletter. \nDoug will describe key considerations necessary when deciding where to homeport submarines\, and draw from his two reports relating to east-coast basing of Australia’s next class of submarines.  This promises to provide a fascinating insight into this strategically important decision making process. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n A relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting \n

SUMMARY:Victorian Chapter - “Show & Tell”
DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 22 August 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \n“Show & Tell” \nThis “Show & Tell” evening breaks with our normal monthly meeting practice of listening to a Guest Speaker.  It provides an opportunity for attendees to bring along items which they consider of likely interest to others in our Chapter\, and to describe their relevance in just a few minutes. \nIn effect this provides a dozen or more Guest Speakers\, each presenting a short vignette.  There are no limits to what members can offer to the evening\, with the only constraint being a limit of five minutes in which to convey their message \nSo rummage around in those old cupboards\, sea chests\, photo albums and sock drawers – or even song books – to help bring this evening alive. \nPast events of this nature have proven to be most entertaining\, with a smattering of humorous topics among others of a more serious nature.   Our President will do his best to maintain “good order and discipline” by running the proceedings.  It would be helpful if those intending to speak would advise him by email beforehand – at andrewmackinnon0404@gmail.com. \nAs noted in our last “Three Headed Dog” newsletter\, the evening will include a short ceremony to hand over the prize-winner’s Belt awarded to Stoker Leonard “Len” Stanley Hill who won the Heavyweight Division of the Mediterranean Fleet Championships in 1936.  This encased belt will be on display before being presented to his son for future safe keeping in the family. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting
