DESCRIPTION:The NHS talk this month is on Monday April 15th at 6pm at the Claremont Tennis Club. \n  \nTOPICS: Rowing Across the Indian Ocean and the Escape and Rescue Services for Submarines of the Royal Australian Navy. \nSPEAKER: Chris Cleghorn  \nChris Cleghorn is a former Royal Marine Commando and has spent most of his career in the Royal Marines in small boat operations globally\, and Chris currently works for the company dealing with the escape and rescue services for submarines of the Royal Australian Navy. \nChris was the Skipper of the 4 man team which rowed for 69 days in 2023 from Geraldton across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius\, a total of about 7\,000kms. Their well-equipped 8.8 metre carbon fibre boat\, called ‘Brain Wave’ was home for the team\, and they maintained a gruelling two hours on\, two hours off\, rowing in pairs. This endurance row was to support Parkinson’s Research. Chris previously rowed across the Atlantic Ocean with his brother in 2011 after learning that a close relative had Parkinson’s. After dementia\, Parkinson’s is the second most common neurological disease in Australia\, and this progressive neurodegenerative disorder presents huge challenges for those affected\, as well as having enormous economic impacts. \n  \nThe talk is on Monday April 15th  at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park on Davies Road. Graham White AM RAN (ret’d) \n  \nCapt. Graham White served in the Royal Australian Navy for 31 years as an engineer officer\, which included 12 years in the submarine force\, 2 years on loan to the Royal Navy in \nsubmarines on operation during the Cold War\, followed by positions in construction\, maintenance\, and operations of Australian Oberon Class submarines as the Fleet Marine Engineer. \nGraham was the original Project Director of the Collins Class project for 4 years\, based in Australia with regular visits to Sweden. Following a period as the Executive Director of the \nHeavy Engineering Board\, Graham filled management positions in Australian shipyards in Western Australia and Victoria. \n  \nGraham was then responsible for the production\, tests\, and trials for the first 3 years of the first 3 Collins Class submarines at the Australian Submarine Corporation in South Australia\, \nbefore becoming the Australian Submarine Corporation Manager in Western Australia. \nFollowing retirement in 2000\, Graham initiated the Sailability program – sailing for the disabled  at the Royal Perth Yacht Club and has received several awards associated with \ncommunity activities in Western Australia. \n  \nThe talk is at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park on Davies Road. DESCRIPTION:It is now the beginning of the new season of the Naval Historical Society-WA Chapter talks for 2024. The meetings are held on the third Monday of every month for a 6pm start at the Claremont Tennis Club. \nThe Naval Historical Society’s talk on Monday February 19th is about:  \nHMS HOOD\, WHICH WAS SUNK 83 YEARS AGO ON MAY 24th 1941 \n  \nHMS Hood\, the largest Battle Cruiser in the world at the time of its construction in 1918\, was sunk 83 years ago on May 24th\, 1941\, by the German Battleship Bismarck.It is the 100th Anniversary of HMS Hood’s Empire Cruise and her visit to Australia\, when her first port of call was Fremantle on February 27th 1924. The February 2024 monthly meeting will commemorate and remember this occasion and the 1\,415 Royal Navy officers and crew who lost their lives in only three minutes when HMS Hood was sunk. \nThe speaker will be Nigel Rogers\, the President of the Naval Historical Society-WA Chapter. \n  \nThe talk is on Monday February 19th at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park on Davies Road. DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Iron Men and Tin Fish \nThe Story of WW2 Submarine Operations from Fremantle\, WA\, from 1942 to 1945 \nIn the period from 1942 to 1945\, Fremantle was the second largest submarine base in the World. Some 167 Allied submarines operated from Fremantle\, and they conducted one of the most effective submarine operations in history. The US submarines operating from Fremantle\, sank over 50% of all the Japanese tanker tonnage\, and 42% of Japanese warships. \nIn a Report to Congress on the United States Naval Administration in World War II\, the Perth-Fremantle area was generally conceded the finest base area any US submarines operated from in the Pacific during the war\, with gracious hospitality and genuine appreciation shown to the submariners by the populace of Perth\, and the Pacific Fleet submarine skippers requesting to end their patrol run at Fremantle. \n  \nSPEAKER: Commodore Bob Trotter OAM RAN (ret’d) \nCommodore Bob Trotter OAM RAN (ret’d) was a submariner in the Royal Australian Navy for 35 years and served on or under most seas and oceans in the world. After several Senior Headquarters postings\, Bob retired in 1998 from the position of Commodore Fleet Bases at HMAS Stirling\, Garden Island WA. He is a Patron of the Submarines Association. Bob was one of the Directors of the Finding Sydney Foundation which found the wreck of HMAS Sydney II in 2008\, for which Bob had the honour of being awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia. \n  \nThe NHS-WA Chapter talk is on Monday October 16th\, 2023 at 6:00pm at the Claremont Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club\, also at Claremont Station opposite the Tennis Club\, and in the public car park opposite Foodies on Davies Road. Ovens\, an Oberon Class submarine of British design\, built in the UK\, now located at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle\, to Collins Class and Virginia Class submarines\, to the planned AUKUS nuclear submarines.           What does the future hold?” \n\nSPEAKER: Roy Stall joined the Royal Australian Navy as a 16-year-old in the first intake of Junior Recruits\, graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College in Jervis Bay\, NSW\, and served in various Navy vessels. \nRoy has had extensive experience for many years as a tour guide and tour guide supervisor at the Fremantle Maritime Museum on H.M.A.S. Ovens\, an Oberon Class submarine. DESCRIPTION:The April meeting of the NHS-WA Chapter will take place on Monday April 17th at 6pm in the Claremont Tennis Club. \n  \nTOPIC: The Naval Auxiliary Patrol (NAP) which used the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club as its operational base during the Second World War. \n  \nThe topic will cover the brief history of Keanes Point\, named after Edward Keane who built his private home there\, called Cappoquin House\, which is now the home of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. During the Second World War\, the Royal Australian Navy took over the Club from 1942 to become H.M.A.S. Leeuwin II\, and boats at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club were acquired which then formed the Naval Auxiliary Patrol. (NAP) \n  \nSPEAKER: Robert Parker\, a retired Chartered Accountant\, is the Immediate Past Commodore of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club\, (RFBYC) and is the current co-convenor of the Club’s Archives Group. Robert has been a member of the RFBYC for 54 years. Robert’s grandfather was a member of the Club\, as well as his father who was Vice Patron and Commodore\, (both deceased). DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: The highlights of a Seagoing Career in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy\, plus a brief overview of the current role as Senior ADF Officer in WA \nCommodore Ivan Ingham AM RAN\, is the Senior Australian Defence Force Officer based at HMAS Stirling on Garden Island\, WA\, which is the home to the second largest Naval Base in Australia\, where there are many crucial points of interest to the defence of Australia. \nCdre Ingham was educated and trained in Dartmouth and Greenwich in England\, and served for 20 years in many Royal Navy ships. He experienced repeated operational deployments to the South Atlantic\, Mediterranean\, Adriatic\, Middle East and Asia. He served in the Gulf during the Iraq War in 2003 and was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service for his role bombarding targets on the Al Faw Peninsula. \nHe transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 2001\, directed Border Protection operations; was involved in the Middle East for Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Piracy operations; and developed the Fleet Warfare Plan\, which was the Warfighting Campaign Plan; and established the Maritime Task Group. \nIn 2011 Cdre Ingham was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). \n  \n  \nThe NHS-WA Chapter talk is on Monday March 20th\, 2023 at 6:00pm at the Claremont Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park opposite Foodies on Davies Road. DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nMonthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 24 October 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker Commander Doug Stevens RAN (Rtd) \n  “RAN Submarine Basing” \nDoug spent 21 years as an Engineer on full time service in the Royal Australian Navy\, and many years later commenced a further nine years of part time service.  In 2010 he was commissioned by Head of the Future Submarines Program\, RADM Moffitt\, to research and write a future-submarines basing study.  The associated report\, submitted in November 2011\, underpins today’s decision making by Defence about the creation of an east coast submarines home port. \nThe 2011 report was written around Defence’s planned acquisition at that time of twelve diesel-electric submarines.  Its stated purpose was to inform submarine homeport decision making which was anticipated to take place from 2021 onwards.  It shortlisted in descending order\, nine east coast homeport options. \nThe cancellation of the twelve diesel-electric submarine program and its replacement by eight nuclear propelled submarines reduces the east-coast homeport options\, according to Doug\, from nine to five.  Doug updated his earlier report in June this year with a related article in the Naval Officers Club Newsletter. \nDoug will describe key considerations necessary when deciding where to homeport submarines\, and draw from his two reports relating to east-coast basing of Australia’s next class of submarines.  This promises to provide a fascinating insight into this strategically important decision making process. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n A relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting \n

Chris’ interest in passenger ships began as a child when he read a book about the Titanic. In 2008\, Chris became the youngest speaker to talk aboard the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 during her farewell season\, as part of the renowned Cunard Insights Programme. Since then\, Chris has lectured aboard many cruise ships\, at maritime museums around the world and other functions such as at Universities\, dinners and luncheons. Paul also served in the counter terrorist squadron of the Special Air Service Regiment and he was deployed on operations to Iraq on two occasions. In the course of his military career\, Paul commanded a Clearance Diving Team\, a navy patrol boat and the Navy’s Submarine Escape and Rescue Service. DESCRIPTION:TOPIC:     The Sinking and Salvage of the RFA Ennerdale off the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean on June 1st 1970. \nThe 42\,000 ton tanker\, RFA Ennerdale (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) left Mahé\, the main island of the Seychelles\, en route to refuel the Royal Navy Frigate HMS Andromeda\, when it struck a submerged pinnacle of granite and sank\, and oil started seeping from the ship. The immediate salvage operations of the Royal Navy warships and the unique solution prevented a potentially catastrophic ecological and environmental disaster on the pristine shores and fishing grounds of the Seychelles. The Speaker\, Lieut.Cmdr. Roger Jardine-Clarke RN (Ret’d) will tell his personal story about the sinking and salvage operations of the RFA Ennerdale\, as he was serving as the Torpedo and Anti-Submarine Officer on HMS Andromeda. \nSPEAKER:        Lieutenant Commander Roger Jardine-Clarke RN (Ret’d) \nRoger joined the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) Dartmouth September 1963. Roger served predominantly at sea in frigates and mine countermeasures squadrons in the UK\, Mediterranean\, Gulf and Far East stations\, including Command experience on Brave Class Fast Patrol Boats and Boeing Jetfoils. Roger had an overseas exchange post in SE Asia and was a qualified navigation and underwater systems specialist and instructor. Roger also served on the staff of the School of Maritime Operations. He joined the RAN College in 1963 and spent 38 varied and rewarding years in uniform at sea and later ashore\, including command of the patrol boat HMAS Wollongong and Navy’s shore establishments at HMAS Cairns and HMAS Coonawarra.  In 2001 he joined the Australian Public Service and served a further 17 years in Navy Headquarters\, as the Director Navy Infrastructure Plans. \nAndrew has an abiding interest in the history of the Royal Australian Navy and is currently the President of the Victoria Chapter of the Naval Historical Society of Australia. \nHis presentation will describe the life story of the fast J-Class Submarines\, which were built in the UK during World War I.  He will briefly mention their service in the Royal Navy\, before all six were gifted to Australia in 1919 and made their way with a new depot ship to Australia\, under the watchful eye of a wartime submarine Victoria Cross winner. \nHe will cover the maintenance challenges they faced on arrival in Sydney\, and their subsequent transfer to a new flotilla headquarters at Corio Bay in Geelong\, Victoria.  The account will outline their brief seagoing training activities on the Australian coast before they fell victim to heavy Defence budgetary cuts in the post-war period\, which ultimately led to their scrapping and scuttling at various sites in the Port Phillip area. \nThey are arguably now Victoria’s submarines! \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:The Speaker:     Nigel Rogers\, President of the Naval Historical Society-WA Chapter \nTopic:           THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC \nThe Battle of the Atlantic was the longest lasting Battle of World War 2\, from September 3rd\, 1939 to May 7th\, 1945\, some 2074 days. The Battle ranged across vast distances from South America’s River Plate to the freezing Arctic Sea\, through which allied convoys shipped vital supplies to the Soviet Union. Australia played a very significant role in the Battle which included many Royal Australian Navy personnel\, who were involved in anti-submarine warfare (ASW)\, as well as the involvement of the Royal Australian Air Force. \n  \nThe NHS-WA Chapter talk is on Monday June 20th at 6:00pm at the Claremont Lawn Tennis Club\, Shenton Road\, Claremont. Parking is at the Tennis Club and in the public car park opposite Foodies on Davies Road. SUMMARY:Presentation and Dedication of an Australian White Ensign
DESCRIPTION:With kind permission of the Chief of Navy\, Vice Admiral M J Noonan AO RAN\, the Naval Historical Society of Australia is to present an Australian White Ensign to St John’s Church Birchgrove which will then be dedicated in the presence of the Rector of St John’s\, the Reverend Cannon Peter Yeats\, and Chaplain Catherine Wynn Jones RAN. \nOn 18 June 1944\, in recognition of the great contribution made by the people of this Parish to the shipbuilding industry and in particular the services of the Rector\, the Reverend Arthur Rix\, and his choir in launching 62 ships\, an Admiralty White Ensign was presented to St John’s and dedicated in the presence of Her Excellency Lady Gowrie\, wife of the Governor-General. The remains of this proud flag will be laid up and presented to the safe keeping of Captain Viktor Pilicic CSC RAN\, the Commanding Officer of HMAS Kuttabul.\nFor those who wish to avail themselves of a short ferry ride from Circular Quay – Wharf 5 departing at 8.45 am a mini bus will meet the ferry at Balmain East with transport to the church. Limited parking is also available close to the church on the corner of Spring Street and Birchgrove Road.  \nThe ceremony will comprise a church service\, led by a full choir\, and then Holy Communion. This will be followed by a short address by the Vice President of the Naval Historical Society\, Mr John Jeremy AM. John started his working life as an Apprentice Ship Draftsman at Cockatoo Island Dockyard and many years later was its last Chief Executive. The presentation and dedication ceremony will then be conducted with the assistance of a uniformed contingent from the RAN comprising a naval bugler and marching party.   \nFollowing the ceremony refreshments will be made available at the adjacent Church Hall\, with rest rooms. Afterwards a short bus tour is planned to places of maritime interest before retiring at midday to a nearby historic hotel for a set luncheon\, with a choice of main course\, plus vegetarian option\, dessert\, tea & coffee at a cost of $50 per head. A bar service is also available. DESCRIPTION:From arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the present Port Jackson has been home to naval units. Initially ships were detached from the Royal Navy to provide Naval defence until 1859. Then followed the New South Wales Colonial Navy\, the Commonwealth Naval Force from Federation and from 1911\, the Royal Australian Navy. \nThe aim of this short walking tour on Bradleys Head where its own military history and stunning vistas combine\, our knowledgeable guides will tell stories along a timeline from first European settlement to the end of WW2. These stories of naval events from the 20th century also connect with the military and naval activity on the Harbour from the First Fleet to the establishment of the RAN. \nTour Information\nFrequency: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month February to November. \nLocation: Bradleys Head on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour lies at the end of Bradleys Head Road which is accessed by following Military Road from Mosman. Being part of the Sydney Harbour National Park access fees are applicable. Information is available from the NPWS website. \nGroup Size: from 10 to 20 maximum \nTime: This tour commences at 10.30am and concludes by 12.00 pm at the same point. \nMeeting Point: The tour starting location is the circular Navy Memorial on Bradley’s Head adjacent the mast of HMAS Sydney. \nMobility: The pathways and areas visited during this tour are generally flat and easily accessible. The total distance walked is less than one kilometre. \nFootwear: Sensible footwear is a must. \nHats\, sunglasses\, sunscreen and bottled water: The tour is outdoors. Come prepared\, even if the weather is overcast. \nPlanning your trip: The best method of travel to Bradley’s Head is motor vehicle. Car parking for a limited number of vehicles is available on the lower level adjacent the memorials. Additional parking is available a short walk away on the access road into Bradleys Head. \nCancellation Policy: Although it is possible for the tour to proceed rail\, hail or shine\, the lack of shelter if inclement weather is forecast may determine cancellation or postponement of the tour. If this is necessary the guide will contact the tour organiser late on the previous day. DESCRIPTION:Naval Historical Society of Australia – Victoria Chapter \nCordially invites you to \nOur Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 23 May 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker \nLieutenant Commander John Redman RAN (Rtd) “Sydney-Emden Battle & Aftermath” \nLieutenant Commander Redman’s naval career as a professional engineering officer began in the Royal Navy before he transferred to the RAN in 1972.  He served in HMA Ships Sydney\, Melbourne and latterly as Senior Engineer in HMAS Stalwart\, before retiring and working in various senior consultancy roles. \nJohn has an abiding interest in naval history and is currently the Vice President of the Naval Historical Society of Australia (Victoria Chapter). \nHis presentation will describe the so-called Battle of Cocos\, which was a single-ship action that occurred on 9 November 1914\, involving the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney as it responded to an attack on the communications station at Direction Island by the German light cruiser and commerce raider SMS Emden.  This battle was the Royal Australian Navy’s first victory during World War I and ended Emden’s dominance in the waters around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. \nIn addition to describing key aspects of the battle\, John will cover the less well-known story of how the German Navy raiding party left behind on Direction Island\, under Emden’s Executive Officer Helmet von Mücke\, made their escape after Sydney was compelled to disengage from the battle and resume convoy escort duties.  Over the next six months\, Mücke led this group of 53 sailors on one of the longest escapes recorded – over 11\,000 km (6\,800 nm) by sea and land – losing only one man to disease and three to enemy action. \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting

DESCRIPTION:Our Monthly Meeting at 1900 on Monday 26 April 2022 \nAt Waverley RSL – Sunset Room \n161 Coleman Parade\, Glen Waverley \n  \nGuest Speaker \nLieutenant Commander Roger Buxton RCN (Rtd) \n“Exploring and Charting the Western Arctic” \nThe Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet.  Areas that in the past were seldom navigable because of ice are becoming ice-free for longer in the summer.  For strategic and environmental reasons\, the ability for more ships to passage through the Arctic for longer periods each year is becoming increasingly important. \n  \nNHSA member Roger Buxton will talk on “Exploring and Charting the Western Arctic” to show how this area was discovered and opened up\, from the earliest times to the present day.  The talk will concentrate on the reasons for the voyages of exploration and their results\, and especially the effect of the evolution of technology (“the science of the industrial arts”) on navigation and accuracy in mapping the Arctic. \nRoger is a former Royal Canadian Navy Weapons Officer (combined Gunnery/TAS and Weapons Electrical\, later PWO) with an interest in naval history and the Arctic.  He has spoken at our meetings previously\, including on the Franklin Expedition to the Arctic to complete the search for the North West Passage. \n  \n  \nMembers and Guests are most welcome \n(Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination status will be required to gain entry) \n  \nA relaxing meal and drink beforehand in the RSL’s delightful Warramunga Room is always a pleasant prelude to the 1900 meeting
