Isaacs, Jeff

Jeffery Isaacs, born in 1936, is an Australian artist renowned for his depictions of military heritage and historic defence architecture. His work has been widely recognized for capturing the spirit and structure of Australia's defence legacy.

He is best known as a Defence Artist, producing detailed watercolours and oil paintings of forts, barracks, and military colleges across Australia. His portfolio includes pieces like Young Endeavour and Duntroon House, Royal Military College, Canberra. His artworks have appeared in auctions and museum collections, including the Temora Aviation Museum. Prices for his pieces have ranged from modest to several hundred dollars, reflecting both historical and artistic value.

His paintings are rooted in realism and heritage but translate well to maritime topics. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania asked Jeff Isaacs to produce 12 paintings that could be reproduced in a commemorative calendar for the Royal Australian Navy’s 75th anniversary 1911 - 1986. These works celebrated the Navy’s history and operations via vivid, realistic depictions of naval life and vessels.

Ships like HMAS Tobruk and HMAS Whyalla appeared, showcasing both calm and stormy maritime scenes. He also captured dramatic seascapes, including Sydney Harbour under turbulent skies. Locations such as Spectacle Island, a historic naval site, were illustrated to highlight environmental preservation and heritage. The calendar honoured the Navy’s foundation in 1911 and its evolution over 75 years, blending military pride with artistic reverence.

In 1992 his portfolio Australian Defence Heritage was commissioned by the Directorate of Public Relations, reflecting a movement to document and preserve Australia’s military architecture.

Listed are just a few of the military related books that Jeff illustrated: Canberra sketchbook / written and illustrated by Jeff Isaacs; Return to Greece: 50th anniversary of the campaign / illustrations by Jeff Isaacs; words by Michael Tracey; research by Irene Coombes; High fliers: leaders of the Royal Australian Air Force / Alan Stephens and Jeff Isaacs; The spirit of ANZAC / illustrations by the Defence artist Jeff Isaacs ; words by Michael Tracey.

Mr Jeffery George Isaacs was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 11th of June 1996. Award event; The Queen's Birthday 1996 Honours List. Citation: For service to art and Australia's defence heritage as the defence artist in the Department of Defence.
