• About Gerald Maurice Burn

  Gerald Burn was a painter in oil and water-colour of marines and architectural subjects. He was born in London, son of the architect and painter George Adam Burn.

  Gerald studied at South Kensington, later studies taking place in Germany, Belgium and France. He exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1881 and also at Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and with Portsmouth and Hampshire Art Society.

  Gerald travelled widely, eventually settling in 1907 in Amberley, Sussex, to use the studio of the watercolourist Rose Barton.

  National Maritime Museum, Science Museum and other public venues in Britain and abroad hold his work.

  The Australian Navy’s first flagship, the battle cruiser HMAS Australia  was the centrepiece of the ‘Fleet Unit’, whose acquisition signalled the RAN’s arrival as a credible ocean-going force.
