50 Years of World Ocean Racing

Overview: –

 Lindsay will talk about the changes he has observed over 50 years and some of the highlights of this world-renowned ocean racing classic that attracts competitors from across the globe.

Lindsay is a 49-year veteran of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race having sailed from 1973 to 2022. A record for consecutive races.

His first two races were as a forward hand and then quickly learned that the back end of the boat was easier and migrated to that of navigator.

Up until 1983 that was done by use of sextant and mathematical calculations.

In 2023 Lindsay helped sail Kialoa II from Sydney to the UK to compete in the 2023 Fastnet Yacht Race. This Boxing Day he intends to sail in his 50th consecutive Sydney Hobart.

The Sydney Hobart Tattersalls Cup. Won by yachts Lindsay navigated. In 1984, 1991 and skippered 2006

Lindsay May has sailed in all the world’s leading ocean races including –

Sydney Hobart                                                          49 times.

Fastnet – UK to Plymouth                                          2 times.

Fastnet – UK to Cherbourg                                        1 race.

China Sea Race – Hong Kong to Philippines            3 times.

Darwin to Dili – East Timor                                        1 race.

Newport USA to Bermuda                                        .1 race.

Transpac – Long Beach USA to Honolulu                  1 race.

.

And most ocean races along the Australian East Coast.
