Frigates for the Royal Australian Navy

Wed 17 Jul, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Zoom Presentation,

Overview –

The classification ‘frigate’ goes back a long way, but the classification re-emerged during World War II to describe the ‘twin-screw corvettes’ designed for the Royal Navy to seek and destroy German submarines in the North Atlantic. A number of ships of this type were built in Australia for the RAN.

In this presentation John will review the development of RAN frigates from World War II to the 1970s — a class of ship now on the way to becoming powerful warships almost as large as, and arguably much more powerful than, the light cruisers of the World War II era.

Presenter – John C Jeremy AM.

John is a graduate in naval architecture from the University of New South Wales. He spent most of his career at Cockatoo Dockyard in Sydney and held several positions in the planning and technical area before being appointed Technical Director of the company in 1976.  In 1978 he also took responsibility for all production activities. John was Managing Director/Chief Executive of Cockatoo Dockyard Pty Limited from 1981 to 1991.

He is currently editor-in-chief of The Australian Naval Architect. John is Senior Vice President of the Navy League of Australia and Vice President of the Naval Historical Society of Australia. He has written three books on the history of Cockatoo Dockyard
