The Australian Naval Board convened a Board of Inquiry to investigate the loss of HMAS CANBERRA at Savo Island.
After an uncomfortable voyage across a rough Coral Sea HMAS Katoomba disembarked the rescued crew of the American Submarine S-39. Katoomba had been on convoy escort when ordered to assist S-39 which was aground on Rossel Island Reef in the Louisiade Archipelago. After an unsuccessful attempt at towing the submarine off failed she was scuttled and the crew embarked for transit to Townsville.
