The ocean liner was carrying a group of veterans returning to Europe on a visit. A dozen of his group had been assigned to the Captain’s table but, unfortunately, the ship ran into a full storm.
The 12 showed up for dinner looking a little green and showing signs of distress. The Captain made this speech:
“I hope the 12 of you will enjoy your voyage. It is a pleasure to look into your 11 faces and realize that the eight of us will be dining together for the next few evenings. If any of the four of you would like a rubber of bridge, I’d be glad to see both of you in my cabin.
Steward, will you clear the table please, I dislike dining alone“.
