HMAS Hawkesbury and HMAS Burdekin were called upon to assist the burning tanker Misson Ridge following her collision with the Liberty Ship Don Marquis near Manus in the Admiralty Islands. A party from HMAS Hawkesbury boarded the Don Marquis and fought the fires until a salvage tug arrived. HMAS Burdekin rescued over 500 people from the two vessels and landed them at Manus Island.
