On 14 July 2020 previously secret correspondence between the then Governor General Sir John Kerr and Her Majesty the Queen was published by the National Archives of Australia 45 years after the dismissal of the Whitlam Government.
One of our members, James Marrs, who was undergoing a sonar course in San Diego at that time has forwarded copies of two letters he received from the Australian Naval Attaché Washington which readers may find of interest.
James had previously been posted to England for a Special Duties Officers Course when he had purchased new car (aerodynamic with right hand drive) from the Citroen factory at Versailles, which he drove to England, and which was later freighted to Australia. On his way home he was posted for training in the US prior to joining HMAS Perth as Assistant Weapons Electrical Officer. With his considerable expenses James was just about out of funds so the first message from ANA made him nervous.
