Rex Gilroy, the controversial historian who in 1974 was the Archaeological Director, History Director and Director of the History Museum at Mount Victoria, discussed the possibility of other ships having visited Australia before the Dutch. This included the Phoenicians, Chinese, Malay and even Vikings. Australian Aboriginal myth and legend speaks of a race of culture-heroes that inhabited the land before them in the long-ago Dreamtime, and who had passed on much of their culture to the Aborigines. These culture-heroes are variously described as being pale or white-skinned and taught the First Nation warriors the use of the woomera in spear throwing and the manufacture of the boomerang. Such traditions convinced Gilroy to look further than written records.
