Fremantle Port has now be staging an annual Maritime Day for many years. Last November the major on-water attraction was the Royal Australian Navy’s submarine rescue gear ship, ADV Stoker.
The bright orange hulled, 83-metre long Stoker welcomed aboard hundreds of locals to inspect the ship’s search and rescue capabilities employed in support of the RAN’s Collins class submarine fleet.
The event was held at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal to celebrate all aspects of the maritime industry.
The Maritime Day is held every two years for families to get closer to the harbour, its vessels and all things marine. A special bonus last year, held inside the heritage-listed passenger terminal, was a large collection of art by renowned Australian contemporary artist Howard Taylor.
More than 8000 people attended the Maritime Day. Some of the attractions included free harbour rides by Jetwave Marine, the port’s fascinating historical photo exhibition, displays by the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Border Force, plus wooden boats and a Switzer tug.
