- About Harris, George Frederick
George Frederick Harris (1856–1924) was a Welsh portrait and landscape painter. Born in Birmingham, West Midlands, in England, he lived in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales for most of his life, before emigrating to Australia in 1920. He died in Sydney just four years after his arrival.
In Wales George had established himself as a successful artist and photographer. He was chairman and secretary of the South Wales Art Society. He was successful enough for the Merthyr Tydfil Museum & Art Gallery to hold a collection of his paintings. There are over 40 paintings attributed to Harris now held by public bodies or in public art collections.
Harris’s portraits and landscapes exhibit a strong sense of realism, with careful attention to textures, and natural light. He primarily worked in oil, a medium that allowed him to build depth through layering and subtle tonal transitions. Harris’s work leaned more toward the academic tradition, emphasizing technical precision over stylistic experimentation.
