Moving Bases – Royal Navy Maintenance Carriers and MONABS (Mobile Naval Air Bases).
By Commander Davis Hobbs, MBE, RN (Rtd).
Maritime Books, Lodge Hill, Liskeard, Cornwall, PL14 4EL
This is a very detailed, well researched and profusely illustrated history of the British Pacific fleet’s ‘air train’ in world war time. One of the BPF’s main problems was establishing a fleet train to support the fighting ships so far from fixed bases.
This book describes very well the associated establishment of an air train to support specifically fleet air arm activities. This had to be done at short notice from the United Kingdom and with no precedent.
