HMAS Melbourne III decommissioned at Fleet Base East. Since commissioning in 1992, Melbourne had steamed more than 900,000 nautical miles, deployed on operations to the Middle East eight times and earning battle honours for service in East Timor, the Persian Gulf and Middle East

September 26, 2019

The lead elements of a RAN task group left Sydney to participate in bilateral and multinational activities in North and South-East Asia over four months. Vessels involved included HMA Ships Hobart, Parramatta, Stuart, Ararat, Sirius, Arunta, Leeuwin, Gascoyne and Diamantina plus four combat helicopters

December 22, 2018

HMAS Gascoyne II returned to Australia after completing the longest voyage undertaken by a vessel of its class. Gascoyne, along with sister ship, HMAS Huon, had visited ports and exercised in the Republic of Korea, Japan and the Philippines.  Gascoyne and Huon steamed in excess of 4,000 nautical miles during the voyage and were the first Australian Mine Warfare vessels to travel to the Republic Of Korea

HMA Ships Hawkesbury and Norman were decommissioned . They had been in Extended Readiness Availability since 2009.

The outstanding service of the Royal Australian Navy’s Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV) was recognised with the presentation of the Unit Citation for Gallantry at a ceremony conducted by the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and former Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett at the Australian War Memorial

The ADV Cape Inscription was commissioned at Fleet Base West. The two Cape-class patrol boats for the navy were built by Austal under a AU$63 million project and leased for 2 years

After almost two years of operations with the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Defence Vessel Cape Byron was returned to the original owner, Australian Border Force. Since July 2015, Cape Byron steamed 68,208 nautical miles whilst operated by a Royal Australian Navy crew and spent 6,494 hours underway.

November 16, 2016

After an earthquake on Nov 14 HMAS Darwin arrived at Kaikoura, New Zealand on 16 November in company with HMNZ Ships Te Kaha, Endeavour and Canterbury, USS Sampson, and HMCS Vancouver. Working parties were sent ashore to assist in restoring essential services such as electricity and water; welfare checks were carried out as well as basic reconstruction tasks and clean-up duties

October 7, 2016

End of Operation Render Safe 2016 during which HMA Ships Diamantina and Huon spent two weeks finding and destroying unexploded WWII munitions in the waters around the Solomon Islands. The Sydney-based minehunter vessels found more than 10 tonnes of projectiles and bombs during their searches around the Russell Islands, Florida Group and Honiara.
