HMS Revenge at Sea of Marmora
Wednesday 31/1/23
It was intended to weigh at 0720 and test Lieut Commdr Pawsey’s star shell sight but owing to the visibility being impaired by rain and snow we remained at anchor.
Thursday 1/2/23
The weather was fine today and evolutions were carried out in the forenoon. In the afternoon all boats were exercised under sail.
Friday 2/2/23
During the forenoon the weather was too bad for boat work but during the afternoon boats were again exercised.
Saturday 3/3/23
At 0740 I embarked in the tug Alice and took passage to Constantinople to attend the dentist in HMHS Maine. I returned to the ship at 1700.
Sunday 4/2/23
Lieut. Comdr. Jackson DSO RN and Warrant Mech. Cummings RN joined the ship, having come overland in the Orient Express. During the afternoon I was invited to a picnic at Prinkipe given by the Admiral.
Monday 5/2/23
At 0720 the squadron weighed and proceeded carrying out gunnery exercises. In the afternoon we returned to the fleet anchorage and moored without a swivel in B2 berth.
Tuesday 6/2/23
Lieut. J.B. Woolley, DSC RN, left the ship today, he is taking passage to England in HMS Benbow. HMS Bryony, the C-in-C’s yacht, arrived at 1400 and anchored off Dolma Baghehe.
Wednesday 7/2/23
Yesterday the Turks made a demand that foreign warships of over 1,000 tons should leave Smyrna by midnight tonight. HMS Calypso is stationed there. At noon yesterday HMS Curacoa was ordered to proceed to Smyrna.
Thursday 8/2/23
All leave was stopped this morning and men ashore on duty were ordered to return to the ship by 1030. However at 1200 the usual leave signal was made. A Squadron consisting of Resolution,Emperor of India, Curacoa, Pegasus and six destroyers have arrived at Smyrna to support Calypso. All the Allied High Commissioners have sent a joint note to Angora protesting against this order.
Friday 9/2/23
It was extremely cold today with a north wind blowing. The temperature fell to 33°F. There was a slight fall of snow.
Saturday 10/2/23
On Saturday forenoon I attended the dentist in HMHS Maine. The hospital ship was looking rather war like with green lights and red crosses formed by lights.
Sunday 11/2/23
Divisions were held on the Quarterdeck and a very light fall of snow occurred. Church was held in the battery.
Monday 12/2/23
HMS Sparrow Hawk arrived at 0800. Tenrol drills were carried out after divisions. OP Parties landed at 0900 to carry out a communication exercise. An Interport assault at Arms was commenced today.
Tuesday 13/2/23
SS Homeric 35,000 tons arrived today and anchored off Seraglio point. She was chartered by Cooks from the White Star line for a 72 days cruise in the Mediterranean at the cost of £176,000. There are 500 American tourists on board. The assault at Arms was continued during the dog watches.
Wednesday 14/2/23
An excellent dance was given by the ladies of the Homeric. It was attended by Officers from the Royal Navy, Army and Air Force. All midshipmen were vaccinated at 1730. We have just heard that the new batch of midshipmen are coming out in the 4th Flotilla.
Thursday 15/2/23
SS Homeric sailed at 0700. Owing to a communication and bombardment exercise taking place tomorrow General Quarters were exercised at 0930. H.L.167 met the Iron Duke bows on and tomorrow is to be docked at Vickers yard.
Friday 16/2/23
OP Parties landed at 0900 and a bombardment exercise was carried out.
Saturday 17/2/23
Ismet Pasha passed through Constantinople on his way to Angora during the evening. Revenge played Malaya hockey at the Turkish Dockyard and was defeated by 8 – 1. (Midshipman Armitage rose to the rank of captain in the Royal Australian Navy. His last ship was HMAS Shropshire, in which he served in the Pacific area and later in Japanese waters.)
