Written whilst serving in HMAS Sydney II
John Ernest James was born at Gateshead England, and came to Australia with his family in 1928. He joined the RAN when he was 16 attaining the rank of Stoker Petty Officer before retiring after some thirteen years service. He was in the Mediterranean Sea in HMAS Sydney and took part in the action against Italian cruisers Bartolomeo Coleoni and Bande Nere.
Diaries were not supposed to be kept in war time but this one, fortunately for the Society, has been passed to the Society for publication. It will be published in two successive issues.
