Colonel D. W. W. Sluman, Royal Marines, assumed command in February 1969. Shortly afterwards 847 Naval Air Squadron commissioned there. HMS Simbang was now the Far East Fleet Amphibious Forces Base and was divided between Kangaw Barracks to the south and Dieppe Barracks to the northeast – with the airfield situated between them. Dieppe Barracks was completed in March 1966, when 40 Commando moved in from Burma Camp, West Malaysia, and the first Commando Light Regiment RA, was established at Sembawang.
The base was vacated on the demise of the Far East Fleet in 1976 and has gradually been subsumed by Government of Singapore housing estates.
