Footnote:
In Part 4 of this article I mentioned some of the officers who commissioned Sydney in 1948. Lieutenant Loosli retired as a Rear-Admiral, and had been commanding officer of HMA Ships Gascoyne, Stuart and Brisbane (including an operational tour in Vietnam) and Supply.
A newspaper report in 1949 incorrectly stated that Sydney cost 1,440,000 pounds; aircraft 320,000 pounds and stores 400,000 pounds. I am certain that Sydney cost in the close vicinity of 4,000,000 pounds sterling, or Australian about 5,000,000 pounds. When the light cruiser Sydney was lost in 1941 426,000 pounds was subscribed by the Australian public to help buy a new Sydney and this sum was absorbed in the purchase price of Sydney (III).
I would like to thank Harry Adlam for editing, and suggesting I write this article; John Bastock for checking and giving advice on writing the manuscript; John Mackenzie, Naval Historian, for his invaluable assistance; LPHOT Steve Given for photographic work, and to CPO Reg Holton and Reg Lascelles for reminding me of some of the incidents that occurred in Sydney.
