Ian Homes has emailed us regarding an error in the stated capacity of the Woolloomooloo oil fuel tanks shown on the back cover of the March edition of this magazine.
The following has been sent in reply.
The capacity of the subject tanks is given as 280,000 litres and, as you have observed, a few (two) zeros are missing. However, this simple addition does not rectify the problem.
Information on these tanks mainly came from consultancy reports prepared for the Art Gallery of NSW late last year. The Heritage Impact Statement talks of the construction of two tanks designed to store approximately 14,200 tonnes of fuel. When reading a further engineering report it becomes obvious that the combined capacity of fuel stored in both tanks is 14,200 tonnes.
Without going into complexities of conversion the total capacity of both tanks should therefore be about 14,000,000 litres.
