The topic of Victoria Crosses (March 2019) never ceases to arouse interest and we have two similar emails from Ken Green and Tony Maskell who invite us to visit the Register of Victoria Cross published in 1981 which states: five civilians have won the VC – Mr R. L. Mangles, Mr W.F. McDonnell and Mr T.H. Kavanagh of the Bengal Civil Service, Mr G.B. Chicken a volunteer of the Indian Naval Brigade and Rev. J.W. Adams of the Bengal Ecclesiastical Department. The first four were in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and the fifth in Afghanistan in 1879.
We thank these gentlemen for their kind assistance to the enhancement of our records.
