Dear Editor
In the latest issue of the Review (June 2014) is a very interesting article by Kingsley Perry about the 1963 Whitsunday Whaler Incident. In both the article and in the caption on the back cover, the whaler is referred to as a Montagu whaler. In my usual pedantic style, I must point out that it should be correctly referred to as a Montagu rig whaler. The 27 foot whaler had been in existence for many years before Admiral Montagu in the early 20th century proposed a standardisation of naval boats and their sailing rigs. As a result of this, the sailing rig for whalers was determined to be what is now known as the Montagu rig. This is well illustrated in the drawings facing page 236 of the Manual of Seamanship Volume 1 dated 1911.
