I was interested to see in the June 1994 edition a reproduction of a memorial plate for HMAS CANBERRA at Honiara in the Solomon Islands.
Having served in this ship in 1940-41, I wish to point out an inaccuracy in the inscription. This reads in part:
HMAS CANBERRA 1928 – 1942
Flagship Australian Squadron, Indian Ocean and Aust. Patrol 1941, South Atlantic, assisted in sinking German supply ship COBURG and captured tanker.
CANBERRA’S time in the South Atlantic was a week’s patrol in July 1940.
However, on 4 March, 1941 in the Indian Ocean, the COBURG and captured tanker KETTY BROVIG were sunk solely due to CANBERRA. HMNZS LEANDER arrived on the scene when both ships were sinking.
