Concerning the Japanese submarine I-124 (Sensuikan I-124 by Tom Lewis and reviewed by T.R. Duchesne – NHR Vol. 19 No.2), its wreck is shown on the approaches to Darwin chart and was often used as a sonar target for ships operating out of Darwin.
As late as 1981 when leaving Darwin to go “up top” in HMAS Hobart we did a number of runs over her to tune our sonar systems on the real thing. I–did the same in HMAS Duchess in 1969, and when serving in HMAS Hawkesbury (CDR.D.H.D. Smyth) in 1954 we frequently used her as a bottomed sonar target.
