Concerning the Japanese submarine I-124 (Sensuikan I-124 by Tom Lewis and reviewed by T.R. Duchesne – NHR Vol. 19 No.2), its wreck is shown on the approaches to Darwin chart and was often used as a sonar target for ships operating out of Darwin.

As late as 1981 when leaving Darwin to go “up top” in HMAS Hobart we did a number of runs over her to tune our sonar systems on the real thing. I^–did the same in HMAS Duchess in 1969, and when serving in HMAS Hawkesbury (CDR.D.H.D. Smyth) in 1954 we frequently used her as a bottomed sonar target.
