Dear Sir,
I note Tony Howland’s obituary [your Editor assures you he is in fact alive and well!] published in the December 07 edition.
I have also read other obituaries published elsewhere.
As a former shipmate I attended the Admiral’s memorial service at the Duntroon chapel.
One item which everyone seemed to miss in his outstanding career, was the fact that he was the First Lieutenant at the Royal Australian Naval College during the late 1940s.
During this time he was mentor to several young naval cadets who later moved on to higher things, some of whom predeceased him.
The list includes two State Governors, one Territory Administrator, one Chief of Defence Force Staff, one Deputy Chief of Defence Force Staff, one Chief of Naval Staff and at least one other Rear Admiral. If I have missed other distinguished positions and the titles quoted may have been different I apologise.
Yours aye,
Hugh Stevenson (1948 Jervis Year.)
