I noticed in a past issue some correspondence from member J. Simm, J.P. regarding RN trawlers named after the cricketers `Bradman’ and ‘Hammond’. There were a number of trawlers so named, others being ‘Jardine’ and ‘Larwood’. All were sunk by air attack, off Norway during April 1940 and all raised and put into service in the German Navy.
Bradman was renamed Friese and given the number NM.03 based at Molde, and later V.6112 – she was sunk by a Russian submarine off Vardo 18.8.44.
Hammond was renamed Salier and numbered NT.04 based on Tromso, and later V.6115 and later again V.6511. She was recovered after the war and became the Norwegian Vesturskin in 1947 and Sletnes in 1954.
Jardine was renamed Cherusker number NM.03 based on Molde, later renumbered V.6117 and sunk by a mine 6.12.42. Her registration in the RN was FY.169.
Larwood was renamed Franke number NM.04 based on Molde, renumbered V.6111 then V.6107 and recovered after the war. She was lost in mine clearing operations 14.12.45.
The vessels were all built by Cochrane (Selby) and their yard numbers were 1167, 1149, 1151 and 1148 respectively.
