After a long and painful illness which he fought with characteristic courage, Trevor Weaver died September last.
Our former Vice president, Librarian, Secretary, Treasurer, Committeeman ,and long time member of the Society had, in recent years, two honours conferred on him.
For his outstanding contribution to the Society and Naval History generally he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Society. The second was the award of a commendation by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Taylor, for his outstanding contributions to the Naval Service over a 35 year period.
Those who knew Trevor and worked with him are fully aware how greatly he merited both.
Trevor joined the RAN as a recruit electrician in November 1959 and progressed from Air Electrics to Radar and Communications. He served in “Albatross” “Melbourne” and “Parramatta” and after converting to LEM Weapons and Radio in “Cerberus”, he served with the 16th Mine Sweeping Squadron during the Malaysian Indonesian Confrontation. He was promoted to Petty Officer and served in “Parramatta” until he left the RAN in 1968. Thereafter Trevor worked at Garden Island where he employed his expertise in radar and weapons to the full.
The Society recently published Trevor’s book on the “Q Class Destroyers/Frigates“, a worthy and welcome addition to the Society’s publications.
On 1 May 1995, at the ceremony at which Rear Admiral Hunt presented the Chief of Naval Staff’s Commendation to Trevor, the General Manager of Garden Island, Mr. Bryan Gibson, also made a presentation to him on behalf of the Garden Island Facility.
The sympathy of all members of the Society goes out to Trevor’s widow, Penny, and their children Gregory and Karen.
