With the recent commissioning of the new American cruiser USS TICONDEROGA (CG-47) readers may be interested in the former ship of the name, the aircraft carrier of the Essex Class, namely the “Tico” CV-14.
The present cruiser is the fifth US Naval vessel to be named after the historic fort on Lake Champlain captured from the British on May 10, 1775 by Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys.
The accompanying official US Navy photograph shows CVS-14 in her final configuration as an ASW (anti submarine warfare) support ship circa early ’70s. The eventual fate of this fine vessel, which served its country in times of war and peace (WW2 and Vietnam), was to be stricken from the register of US Naval Ships on 16 November, 1973, followed by scrapping, a result of the post Vietnam rundown.
