This history of the submarine development is presented in this concise yet comprehensive overview from a RAN officer with a close association with such vessels, Captain B. Nobes, Commanding Officer HMAS Platypus. He begins at the beginning when the legendary origins of the submarine stretch back to 332 BC with a tale about Alexander the Great being lowered into the sea in a glass barrel to study fish. The submarine concept, the idea of a vessel that could emulate the whale, was thereafter consigned to the backwaters of history for some 1,800 years until the 19th century when technology caught up with imagination. Much has happened since Captain Nobes gave this lecture but it provides a valuable overview.
