Tom de Voil’s involvement with HMAS Melbourne began with his first posting to sea. Over his career he was posted to her again, once as a watch keeping EO and also as Marine Engineer Officer seeing service in Melbourne during the Vietnam War.
Tom also served in many other units of the fleet throughout his career, and during an exchange posting with the RN, he worked on the staff of PNO (Tyne), the MoD overseeing organisation during the construction of Ark Royal (and other ships) at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders on Tyneside. After retirement from the navy, Tom spent a further 10 years at AMECON/Tenix during the construction of two FFG’s and 10 ANZAC Class frigates.
