Ruby Boye (Jones) was living on the island of Vanikoro in the Santa Cruz group of the then British Solomon Islands Protectorate when World War Two broke out.
Changing circumstances led to her becoming the operator of a powerful AWA tele-radio for communication with the capital, Tulagi. She was then made an honorary Third Officer in the WRANS relaying messages and weather reports to the United States Navy which were of vital importance for naval operations and battles in the South Pacific.
