Control of the Indian Ocean was paramount in World War II. It was an important maritime trade route between European nations and their colonial territories in East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, British India, Indochina, the East Indies, and Australia. Naval presence was dominated by the Royal Navy Eastern Fleet and the Royal Australian Navy as World War II began. This ‘worms eye view’ is given by Rear Admiral Davidson, dating from his personal experience of Naval Operations in the Indian Ocean 1944-45.
