As we approach 2000 and, later, a new century, it is evident that the RAN Band has evolved significantly from its earliest days this century, or indeed. from its roots within the First Fleet. Music is timeless, and the skill and energy of the Navy’s musicians boundless. With the ongoing support of the community, Naval Headquarters and Government, the future of Navy music and its role in morale, ceremonial, recruiting and Public Relations is assured and invaluable. Even the environmentalists like the Navy Band… it’s wind powered!

An arm of the Naval Training Command, the Director of Music is located on Garden Island and not only manages the recruiting, training, programming and finances of all RAN Bands, but is also responsible for the Ceremonial and Protocol activities of the RAN.

‘Serving in Harmony’ reflects the dimension and character of the RAN Band.

Commander Ashley Greedy joined the Navy in April 1965 as a Recruit Musician. Commissioned from CPOMUSN in 1979, he gained his LRAM in London and has conducted some of the world’s leading bands and artists. He was appointed Director of Music RAN in January 1993 and was awarded an AM the same year for services to Military Music. Promoted in 1997, he is the first RAN Musician to attain Commander rank.
