The purpose of this monograph is to record from a personal point of view, the RAN’s (principally LST 3501) involvement with the early Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE). The Australian first expedition to the Antarctic involved HMA LST
3501 and HMAS Wyatt Earp in the summer of 1947-48. HMA LST 3501 made two journeys, firstly to Heard Island then a second trip to Macquarie Island. HMAS Wyatt Earp made a single trip to the Antarctic continent.
