I sailed from Plymouth in the SS Soudan with several hundred troops returning to their homeland. The ship arrived in Sydney, in July of that year. A seaman’s strike was in progress and all coastal shipping was tied up, however I trans-shipped to the St Albans of the E & A Line for the trip to Townsville, where on 17 July 1919, I was demobilised from HM Naval Service. The following month I was married to Miss Caroline Kennedy, and prepared to resume my employment with the AUSN Line in peacetime.
