I was very interested to see the article on the Newport Ship in our recent journal. I saw the timbers in tubs in Newport in 2005 and had a good explanation from two of the conservators. For me there is a special connection – I have a cousin, Katharine Taylor, living in Beechwood Road, Newport. Her late husband, Steve (1949-2014) was a TV journalist and presenter and did much to publicise the presence of the remains once uncovered during the preparations for the proposed arts centre. My understanding was that the developers weren’t overly excited about what they saw as a hindrance to their project, however the publicity and relevance by Steve and others at the time save the remains and the story for us today. In mid-January Katharine sent me a website address related to the next stages in piecing the jigsaw together.
