It is perhaps of interest to note that the RAN during the 1980 and 1990s, chartered various small trawlers and other small ships as part of a training exercise which involved fitting portable minesweeping equipment to COOP (Craft of Opportunity) vessels. Obviously the RAN of today is conscious of the great reduction in size and capability of the merchant marine of Australia when compared with that before either of the world wars.

Details concerning the Cam and Sons fleet come mainly from the book ‘Oceans, Rivers and Dreams the story of Cam and Sons’, by Stuart Cooke, privately published by David Cam in 2006.
