On the 4th April, 1989,a delightful ceremony took place in the precincts of the Naval Museum on Garden Island, Sydney, in the presentation of much treasured naval memorabilia. Firstly, a beautiful coloured painting by artist Mr. John Speers was presented to Captain L.M. Hinchliffe, DSC, RAN, (Ret) as President of The Naval Historical Society of Australia by Mr Dave Birrell, Secretary of the HMAS Canberra/Shropshire Association of N.S.W.

Also included was a personal gift by Mr Dave Birrell of a framed photograph of the cruiser Shropshire shown while still serving in the Royal Navy and then after the ship had been commissioned in to the Royal Australian Navy, and uniquely bearing the signatures of the three wartime commanders; Captain(s) J.A. Collins, C.A.G. Nicholls and H.A. Showers.
