The following letter has been received from John Jeremy who for many years served at Cockatoo Island Dockyard being its last Chief Executive.
Dear Walter,
The March 2022 edition of the Naval Historical Review was another fine edition of our journal with plenty of interest.
Reading Greg Swinden’s article Jan Stockwin – Naval Shipwright and Author, I see that he states HMAS Melbourne‘needed several months in Sydney’s Captain Cook Dry Dock for repair’ after her collision with HMAS Voyager.
HMAS Melbourne was repaired at Cockatoo Island, not Garden Island, being docked in the Sutherland Dock for two periods, 14 February 1964 to 3 March 1964 and 25 March 1964 to 27 April 1964. She returned to Cockatoo Dockyard in 1969 for an almost identical repair after her collision with USS Frank E Evans.
Regards
John
