I refer to the article “Coastal Defence and the Kings Park Naval Guns” contained in Volume 20, No. 1, 1999[March 1999]. At the last paragraph the author gives his views on the fates of the guns at Fort Glenelg. May I supply the facts taken from “Fort Glenelg, the Fort that Never Was” by P.A. Richardson as an extension to his BA (Hons) thesis written in 1987.
In 1889 the proposed armament outfit for Fort Glenelg was two Elstwick Ordnance Company 9.2 in MkIV E BL guns (numbered 5385 and 5437) and two EOC 6 in MkV BL guns all to be mounted on Hydro-pneumatic platforms. According to my information their fate was not as described in the article.
The 9.2 in gun barrels were both sold to Britain to be installed on railway mountings and together with gun number 7320 (from New South Wales) saw service on the Western front in 1916 & 17.
The 6 in barrels were for a period mounted for display at the Warradale Army Barracks but were later transferred to Fort Largs (the second of the Forts of Adelaide).
