Re THE BEAUFORT TOUCH (Marsden Hordern NHS 21/1)
In response to his queries in that article I would recommend to Society members including Mr Hordern the reading of an account of a visit to Raine Island beacon on 20 March 1860, i.e. sixteen years after its erection by HMS Herald, as described in the book THE VOYAGE OF HMS HERALD, by Andrew David, The Miegunyah Press (MUP) 1995 Pages 390 to 397.
According to this report the tower was painted red and black in vertical stripes when originally erected by Carpenter Mr Stephen Moore and Supervisor Lieutenant J.M.R. Ince. However at the time of Herald’s visit the tower was somewhat dilapidated with the paintwork flaked off and the dome collapsed.
The tower was then only 44 feet high with the dome missing.
This report made no mention of an inscription. I hope this reference may assist Mr Hordern.
