REMEMBERING HMAS AUSTRALIA (I)

In 2002, the (then) NSW Heritage Office   became aware that Fugro Australia had accidentally discovered a very large shipwreck off Sydney in 400-metres during a remote sensing pipeline survey for a
telecommunication route in 1990. The site was suspected to be that of the battlecruiser HMAS Australia, which was deliberately scuttled 50-km east of Sydney Heads, 101-years ago, in April 1924.
The preliminary photographic inspection was undertaken by a remote operated vehicle by Defence Maritime Services under the direction of the Royal Australian Navy . The survey was coordinated by Tim Smith, Maritime  Archaeologist and is a part of the agency’s role in administering the State’s component of the National  Historic Shipwreck Program. Interpretation of the results of the photographic inspection definitively proved that the wreck was that of the former Australian flagship.
