The spectacle that soon afterwards loomed over the horizon was that of three massive ships – and 10 funnels. Queen Mary (3), Aquitania (4) and Ile de France (3) in the convoy that returned the 9th Div AIF from the Middle East to take up the fight against Japan. From the smallest ship in the RAN I watched the world’s greatest liner pass by and eventually disembark her thousands of troops in Sydney.
RMS Queen Mary rests today at Long Beach, California as a tourist attraction. RMS Queen Elizabeth – renamed Seawise University – was destroyed by fire in Hong Kong.
